Excerpts

Q: Why do you like Star Trek?

A: [Barbara]: I think I like ST mainly because it is so believable. I think that one day man really will build starships and go out to explore the galaxy - not exactly in the way they do in ST, but the idea will be the same. It will be an incredibly exciting time and I'd love to be part of it, unfortunately it won't happen for hundreds of years, so I just have to feel part of it by watching ST and feeling I'm part of the adventures of the Enterprise crew. It is very easy to feel a part of it all too because the people are so nice, 1 can't imagine a nicer group of people to spend 5 years with. So for me watching ST is like watching a little bit of life that I'd like to join in with, and people who I would be happy to meet and work with.

Q: What do you think of the Kirk/Spock relationship?

A: [Barbara]: I know there are some zines that write stories which suggest an unnatural relationship between them. I don't believe that. I think they have a very good, and firm friendship based on loyalty and admiration for each other's abilities in their jobs. They work well together and therefore enjoy working together. If they were not in Starfleet I can't imagine them being such good friends though, because Spock's lack of emotions is different to Kirk. I think their friendship has grown out of mutual admiration for each other's abilities at their job. If they didn't work so closely together they would not have been such good friends.

Q:What was your first ST Con like?

A: [Barbara]:

It was like a trip into space, it was fabulous. Not only were there so many ST episodes to watch, everywhere we looked there were people dressed as aliens, or Starfleet personnel- every book, badge and photo were ST-based or else related to some other SF film. We completely forgot all about the outside world for 2 whole days and it was really as if we had spent 2 days on some starship out in the galaxy among a variety of other races from other planets. Also there was a marvellous sense of belonging.

Q: Why do you like Star Trek?

A: [Graham]:

I have always had a keen interest in SF and ST to me is SF at its best. The start of the series in the 60s was at a time when man was beginning to reach to the stars and the series conveyed to its many fans that; the Enterprise was so believable that they thought it possible to journey into space and discover new worlds. This is the key thing - its believability, and being a Trekker to me is believing that we can achieve this in the future. Also it is great fun to be a part of this and live in a new world, for a few days, even though in reality man will not achieve these things for centuries.

Q: What do you think of the Kirk/Spock relationship?

A: [Graham]: They're ideally suited to each other and make a good team, because they're both so different they compliment each other. One has flawless logic, the other has human emotions.

Q: Do you think ST will come true?

A: [Graham]: Yes, especially now the Space Shuttle has been successful. It's our pathway to the stars.
