Looks good! Could even mention if you want that the interfaces are different, hence the confusion. --Samjohnsson 02:32, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Don't we have a block-of-text for/from VolCom that we can steal? I need to hunt down Renay. --SamJohnsson 08:03, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you mean the OTW committee blurbs here and here?--æþel 15:03, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
The latter more than the former, for seed information. ♥! --SamJohnsson 16:24, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

Wrangulator-verse & Committee history

Need to dig out history of the committee and how it came about. Initially it was a sub-committee of AD&T until it was branched off into a full committee of its own. I'll dig through my e-mails and see if I can find when the committee officially formed - though that probably exists somewhere. Highlander.ii 15:39, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

A complete aside, but I love the term, "Wrangulator-verse" or simply "Wrangulator," for that matter. --Mrs. Potato Head 15:53, 28 March 2012 (UTC)
I wish I could remember why we suddenly became 'steampunk-y'... that's probably in my emails too. XD Highlander.ii 04:42, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
Wasn't it the wrangler RPF that set off the steampunk trend? If that's not true, if you do find the true origins, you may want to drop in and edit the Wrangulator article, too. --Anenko 10:32, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
No, I think Samvara's image of the 'Wrangulator' came first, but I could be wrong. If it came about in the chat rooms, I missed the beginnings, but saw all the stuff that came after. I've looked in my emails and can't find where it started there either. Highlander.ii 04:17, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Okay - did more digging and it is possible that jinjurly's fic set off the whole thing - but I was certain there was a discussion somewhere that started it, though I could be entirely mis-remembering. Highlander.ii 05:12, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
It was the discussion in Campfire and the image that came first, yes, and then the fic was written after seeing the image. http://archiveofourown.org/works/22263 Cesy 05:11, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
SUCCESS! Found this: 7/18/10 - Wrangler committee started! (and it was the 'wrangulator' before the committee formed). Highlander.ii 04:35, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

The new "Criticism and discussion of AO3's tagging system" section

Very rough start on the topic. Any reorganizing (and reformatting), additions -- more from FFA, other memes, or from namespace posts on the topic! -- other POVs, etc., most welcome. Also, should the section I added maybe become a separate page (AO3 Tagging?) as it's not just Tag Wrangling that the new section covers, or should we rename this page from "AO3 Tag Wrangling" to "AO3 Tags and Tag Wrangling," or ...? Ditto, any ideas or changes to make it clearer welcome. --Sk 21:38, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

We might even want to split the page in two, one for the committee (Organization for Transformative Works/Tag Wrangling) and one for all the discussion about tags and tag wrangling.
I also had bookmarked some FFA threads on tag wrangling. I think one of the FFA posts with some especially juicy discussion got deleted accidentally, but there's Re: OTW: Dysfunctional Nightmare Dis-Organization? - on the scalability of tag wrangling. (6 November 2011)--æþel 23:28, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
Months later... I moved the sections on the tagging system discussion(s) to their own page, AO3 Tagging Policy Debate. I'm not sure about the title. Other possibilities: AO3 Tagging Policy Debates, AO3 Tagging Policy Discussions and Criticisms, AO3 Tagging Policy Debate and Public Discussion... ?--æþel 04:03, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

2015: Needs some updating

Anyone want to take a stab at updating this page a bit? --MPH (talk) 15:47, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

Tbh, I haven't had the inclination to do so because a lot of this page is still about tagging, not tag wrangling. For example, several parts of the "The Tags" section should probably move to the AO3 page. There's a lot that could be said about wrangling itself and a lot that's changed in the past 3 years (though much of this material is even older than that), but the structure of the whole page makes it kind of hard to give a current view of the committee or its work. I'm not sure what to do about that.... -the old briar pipe (talk) 00:50, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
I know what you mean. They're not subjects I'm familiar with at all. The page is kind of a mishmash and out-dated, and the topics are so large, that it is hard to know where to even start. --MPH (talk) 02:00, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
Looking at the comments above, I can see that this kitchen sink concern is an old issue. Aethel moved a segment to its own page, which is good. I'm thinking we should probably also have a separate page for defining terms. And the non-wrangled tags section should go - wranglers have no relationship to that. Am I right in assuming the goal of this page is to talk about what wrangling is, why it exists, what wranglers do, and the history of the committee? Either way, it almost seems like we need a hub for a collection of topics related to tagging, rather than trying to jam everything onto this page. Could we maybe work around a hub, like "Tagging on AO3" or use the Archive of Our Own#Tags subsection to link to distinct pages for each clear topic? -the old briar pipe (talk) 02:12, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Proposed Updates/Restructuring

I looked over some of the previous issues raised on this page, as well as some things I noticed as well and I have some suggestions. As was pointed out above, currently there's a bit of vagueness here in terms of whether this page covers the tagging system itself, or the committee that oversees it. You'll notice that Organization for Transformative Works/Tag Wrangling redirects here, meaning this page doesn't get listed in the subpages of the broader OTW page, unlike every other one. It's kind of confusing!

So, my proposal is such:

  • Move all committee-related content back to the page I linked above, and remove redirect.
  • The sections that describe the tagging system can stay here, along with the "Tag Wrangler's Work" (maybe), and the page is renamed to something like "Ao3 Tagging System" or "Archive of Our Own Tags"

In the process the committee page can obviously get updated to more recent info ;)

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this! --Mokuroh (talk) 06:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

I think this is a great idea!! I'd just suggest adding a You may be looking for notice to the top of each page, in case someone finds themselves on one page but is looking for information on the other. --Auntags (talk) 13:35, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
I agree with your general assessement of the issue, though I'd propose a slightly different solution, if that's ok? I agree that the redirect page could be reopened as a real page if you want, though in that case this page would be renamed. Given how many outside links off-Fanlore probably already link to this page, I'm not sure that would create the results people are looking for? Instead, I suggest that if we reopen the other page, we turn this page itself into a redirect back to that OTW/Tag Wrangling page and create a separate, new page about the tag system itself.
The sections "Additional Tag Wrangling Vocabulary", "The Tag Wranglers' Work", "The Committee's Work", and "History of the Committee" are all committee sections and should go wherever the committee's page goes. (The terminology is back-end, and in many cases doesn't match front-end terminology that users see.) -the old briar pipe (talk) 02:55, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
This all makes sense to me! Does anyone object to me redirecting this page to Organization for Transformative Works/Tag Wrangling, moving the four sections briar pipe mentioned to that page, and moving the remaining content to a new page called something like AO3 Tagging System as Mokuroh suggested? If not, I can move forward with that this month. Eskici (talk) 15:50, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
Go for it! Thanks for doing that, I know I meant to do it for... a while and then never got around to it XD --Mokuroh (talk) 23:13, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
No problem! This is done ^^ --Eskici (talk) 15:35, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

page history located

I just noticed most of the history of this page is missing: it's over at AO3 Tag Wrangling.--aethel (talk) 23:03, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

The page was created by you on 26 November 2011 and later moved. I believe that subsequent editions have lost some information here and there -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 15:52, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
