A sex.wav is an audiofic composed of edited dialogue, grunts, and sexually suggestive phrases that tells a short, and often naughty, tale. Even in the days before audio recording and editing software was easily available, older fandoms made and distributed sex.wavs.
Examples
Sentinel: The jbsex.wav (:53), made by TM Alexander, takes Jim and Blair from introduction/proposition ("My names is Blair Sandburg. You need someone who understands...") to climax ("Jim!" "Sandburg!" "Oh, ho, ho--man, you are good!"). Phrases like "Let me just show you something" were radically recontextualized, as were phrases like, "You're pretty hard, aren't you?" and "Maybe you could get things going a little faster." Due South: The bfrksex.wav (:41), made by TM Alexander, is a Fraser/Kowalski sex.wav. It takes the characters on an arc from "Fraser, I'm not up for this," to "My ass is numb," with much "Ray! Ray! Ray!"ing in between. (Earliest known dl date: October 8, 1999.[2])
