Canon
TV Series
Rick and Shane know each other before the beginning of the series, they are best friends and partners on the police force. In Season 1, Episode 1 Rick is shot during a police pursuit and slips into a coma. Rick awakes 60 days later after the Zombie Apocalypse has occurred, and goes on a journey to find his family. Meanwhile, thinking Rick is dead, Shane has begun a romantic with Rick's wife Lori. Rick locates Lori, his son Carl and Shane in the later part of Season 1. In Season 2 Shane and Rick are constantly struggling for leadership of the group of survivors. Shane questions Rick's ability to protect Lori and Carl, feeling that he would be a better husband and father. Near the end of Season 2 Shane plans to murder Rick, but Rick acts first, killing Shane.
