More Than Yesterday, Less Than Tomorrow is a Kirk/Spock story by Roberta.

It was published in the print zine Naked Times #28.

Summary

"After 20 years together, Kirk feels that he and Spock are becoming complacent in their relationship until an evening out at a diplomatic function shows Kirk just how solid and loving their relationship is."

Excerpt

"Once beneath the hot water of the shower, Kirk found himself wondering if their ongoing passion had gotten lost, (or maybe just misplaced?) somewhere in the last few years. Whatever it was - time, daily living, or their ingrained knowledge of each other -- Kirk was feeling the effects of erosion on the edges of their once great physical need of each other. At the moment, it seemed terribly important that the fall into a state of comfortable passion did not happen to them. But right now, he was too tired to figure out how to do anything about it. Three solid weeks, countless hours of negotiations, committee meetings, and drafting terms was enough to give him a permanent migraine, along with a near-desperate need for his bed and the blessed oblivion of peaceful, quiet hours of sleep."

Reactions and Reviews

A small problem I had with this story concerned the setting. With the reference to Spock's cadets, I assumed this story was pre-STII:TWOK. Yet, if so, the detail of Kirk being 58 yo doesn't quite fit. Also, I wasn't sure of the purpose of the party, and ended up assuning it was to introduce the Vrothrian Ambassador to Starfleet and political bigwigs. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the warm, loving aura of this, as well as the idea that, after 20 years, they still care about each other so much. [1]

I came across this story at a convention when I had no money left to buy a sine. I casually flipped through and read the first page, and was absolutely hooked. There was no way I was going to leave that convention without reading this marvelous story by an author whose work I really appreciate. What to do? The dealer very kindly let me stand at the table, devouring a "freebie", and I was very glad she did. Fandom in action. I don't know if it's true, but I've been told by a friend that this story was originally meant to be included in THE TWENTY-FIFTH YEAR. If so, I'm glad it was published separately, because its sweet approach to an older Kirk and Spock's relationship would have been in sharp contract to the harder edge presented in TTY. "More Than Yesterday, Less Than Toaorrow" is simple and sweet. It tells of a night when Kirk is exhausted from two straight weeks of negotiating, when he and his bondaate of nearly twenty years must attend a Starfleet diplomatic party/ function. A command performance when he's really just too tired to put one foot in front of the other. His exhaustion creates doubts in his mind, and he wonders whether he and Spock have lost the spark of passion that has always characterized their relationship. He's even too tired to make love, and boy, does that worry him! ... Loved it when the woman who is trying to tempt a totally disinterested Kirk says, "I am woman enough to make you forget all about her." And Kirk thinks to hiaself, "But are you man enough?" I couldn't quite see Kirk telling the reporter out loud, "I've been a 'lover boy' only to Spock for more years than you've been a man. And you can quote me," but this story makes me so indulgent, I'm perfectly willing to go along with it. This whole story is one of those guilty pleasures I'll read several times. just a snapshot of an older, wiser Kirk and Spock that works just right for me. Bravo, Roberta! Would love to read more....
