It's not the end of the world (but you can see it from here) is a Merlin/Arthur fusion with the apocalyptic movie 2012 (33,000 words). The story was written for reel_merlin round 3.

Summary: Arthur, Prince of Wales, finds it hard to accept that he and Merlin have no future. Then he finds out that neither does anyone else.

Recs and Reviews

"I LOVED THIS FIC. LIKE. BURNING. There are no words to tell you all how much I love Apoca!fic, much less one based on the movie 2012. It had suspense, action, romance, devastation -- this fic runs the full gamut of emotions and leaves you weak and exhausted and in love with this author's style, prose and story. Also, I have a weakness for PrinceofWales!Arthur. GORGEOUS."[3]

"Writing a Merlin fic based on the film prompt of 2012 shouldn't really be possible. [...] this is a wonderfully crafted love story between the Prince of Wales and Dr. Merlin Emrys against the backdrop of the world's destruction, and that really sounds cheesy, but it's not, because really, it's more. I think that it is, at the heart of it, Arthur's story, and how he grows into who he is supposed to be. Also, I love Uther and Morgana in this.[4]

"This was fabulous. I love that you took the main idea of the movie and you run with it, instead of sticking to the plot slavishly like many people do with reel fics. Changing things in the original story lets you show the characters acting more IC and I do think that they are very IC here. [...] I also really liked that you focused on Arthur and the royal family. Typically, stories about catastrophes follow focus on the regular people, and it was interesting to see it from a perspective of someone who has all the necessary information, all kinds of resources, and is still helpless in the face of the impending doom, because it just cannot be stopped. It was painful to think of all those people who couldn’t be helped. The apocalyptic plot aside, I really enjoyed your Merlin and Arthur and their relationship. I always like when both sides of the relationship have their own goals and lives, and it was, well, not nice, but refreshing to see them break up for reasons that are understandable and realistic, not because of some contrived misunderstanding. I got really invested in the two of them, and almost cheered at the end, when they got back together :) I actually went through way too many emotions while reading your fic."[5]

First, let’s look at all the things I love this fic contains: modern royalty, secret relationship, APOCALYPSE, adventure, LOTS OF FEELINGS, good characterization, exciting plot, etc.

I haven’t seen the movie on which this is based, honestly I never cared much about it, but the apocalypse is one of my favorite trope of all time, and this fic had been on my to-read list for so long, I was bound to finally read it. And boy am I glad I did.

One of the greatest thing about it, I think, is that it managed a surprising balance between heartfelt and an intimate romance (switching between the present and the past) between Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Merlin Emrys, doctor for MSF, and an exciting, adventurous and terrifying plot that gave me so many feelings and kept me hooked. It was VERY good. Arthur’s POV was absolutely awesome and I felt and cheered for him (especially when he was all kingly and BAMF and perfect—all the Arthur feels), as the whole of humanity and the Earth was destroyed. the author really took the time to established the emotional gravity of it all, and the character dynamics before destroying the whole world.

It was just an emotional roller-coaster and so much fun and a really, really great read.[6]
