Reactions and Reviews

Imagine waking up in a hospital room with no memory of your life. Your parents, your ex-wife, your colleagues and friends visit, show you pictures of your life, but you don't remember. It turns out you're a cop, injured in the line of duty. Your partner is there, a strange, alarmingly polite Mountie, of all things. It turns out he's also your best friend. He sticks by your side and helps you through this horrible, confusing ordeal, but something's amiss. He's strange, yes -- but it's more than that. He's too quiet, and you feel there's something you're not getting, something important. And then your memories start to return and holy shit, you had no idea... [1]

I read this story a long time ago, right when I first started reading due South. When I was thinking about entries for this challenge, I remembered this story and read it again, and was reminded of how much I like it. Ray gets hit in the head in the process of a case and as a result, Ray has amnesia. While this may seem cheesy or cliched, Nemi tells the story of Ray's memory loss and his relationship with Fraser that Fraser carefully hides away, interspersed with flashbacks of their prior friendship and relationship, in such a lovely way that you don't really think about the amnesia part, but the pain on not knowing who you are. Fraser not wanting to assume that the "new" Ray would want their romantic relationship again, and hiding all the pieces, it just breaks my heart. It is hopeful in the end, and Ray and Fraser start moving toward a new relationship, and pick up some of the pieces of their former one. [2]

Ray wakes up in the hospital and he can't remember anything. There are always plenty of amnesia fics in any fandom, and this is a good one. Ray can't read the look on Fraser's face. My only significant problem is that the ending sucks. It just stops. So much left unsaid.[3]
