Sauron is a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium. He is an antagonist in the Silmarillion and the main antagonist in The Lord of the Rings. He is referenced in both the The Hobbit novel and Hobbit films as the Necromancer of Dol Guldur. He is a Maia.

In Fanon

Sauron's character interpretation varies from person to person. Some base their interpretation off of "Mairon the admirable" (Sauron’s original name, often used to refer to pre-evil Sauron). Others believe this undermines Sauron's antagonistic role in canon. [1] In fanart, Sauron is usually depicted as humanoid, often with glowing or catlike eyes. Some examples: by esquitor by phobs by alyruko by misbehavingmaiar

In the Silmarillion fandom, Sauron is often paired with Melkor/Morgoth, the Vala he once loyally served, under the ship name(s) Angbang or Melron.

Another popular fandom pairing is Annatar (an alias and disguise Sauron used to fool the Elves) and Noldor Elf Celebrimbor, the grandson of Feanor. Like Sauron, Celebrimbor was a Smith; and together they crafted the rings of power. In canon, Sauron eventually betrayed and murdered Celebrimbor. This ship name is Silvergifting or Silverfisting.
