Fandom Trumps Hate is a Dreamwidth and Tumblr-based multifandom auction created as a response to the 2016 United States presidential election. The community raises money for progressive charities through annual auctions of fanfic, fanart, podfic, beta reading, and other fan-related activities. The inaugural auction was held December 2016 - January 2017. Fandom Trumps Hate returned in December 2017 for the second annual auction.

What is it?

An online fanfic/fanart auction to benefit a variety of organizations helping populations targeted by Trump and his administration. (Such as the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Trans Lifeline, and the National Immigrant Justice Center.)

How does it work?

Authors and artists will sign up to offer their work at auction. The winner will donate their winning bid amount to one of the charities listed below, then send the author/artist email proof of their charitable donation. Once we know you’ve donated, the author/artist will get to work on your item! If you’ve seen previous auctions to benefit AO3 or Haiti, it’s kind of like that.[1]

Origins

I mean, fandom is community and if you get a community together to do a common thing, there’s power in that.

- bamfinacuddlyjumper, in a 2017 interview with Fansplaining[2]

Fandom Trumps Hate was initially conceived of by Tumblr user bamfinacuddlyjumper (also known as Winter), who worked with a team of fellow fans to organize the first auction.[3] Many of the initial organizers were involved in the BBC Sherlock and Supernatural fandoms.[4]

Fandom Trumps Hate 2017

Three days after the 2016 United States presidential election, bamfinacuddlyjumper posted on their personal Tumblr: "Could we plan some sort of fic/art charity auction? Proceeds to benefit the ACLU/PP/Trevor Project/other groups working to protect us?"[5] The post received around two hundred notes, and prompted the creation of the official Fandom Trumps Hate Tumblr.[2]

On November 12, 2016, the first post on the Fandom Trumps Hate Tumblr was published, announcing the creation of the project with the promise of more details to come.[6] In a reply to an ask published two days later, bamfinacuddlyjumper described the impetus for Fandom Trumps Hate:

"There’s a bit in the FAQs right now that might be helpful, but basically— I (@bamfinacuddlyjumper) was talking with friends in the aftermath of the election, remembered that I’d seen fan auctions to raise money for AO3 and Haiti and even DashCon, and decided to start putting together one to raise money for various charities, in order to give people something else concrete and productive we could do in the wake of Trump’s election.

The model is based on those earlier auctions: authors/artists will offer work, people will bid, the winner will donate their money to one of the listed charities and send their receipt to the artist/author, who will then produce whatever they’ve committed to. We don’t collect the money, hell, we don’t even touch the money, which goes directly to the charities.

We’re still putting the structure in place, which is why much of the site isn’t live and people can’t sign up yet. Hopefully that’ll be sorted by week’s end."[7]

The organizers of Fandom Trumps Hate contacted the organizers of the 2013 fundraiser auction held in support of Archive of Our Own,[8] receiving advice and some of the Google forms developed for that auction.[2] However, much of the materials for Fandom Trumps Hate were developed from scratch. After the auction, the organizers planned to publicly share their resources, so that fans who were interested in developing fandom-specific charity auctions "[wouldn't] have to reinvent the wheel."[2]

Further information on the auction - including a timeline for participation - was shared on December 16, 2016:[9]

Dec 19: Author/artist signups open (also electoral college votes)

Dec 31: Author/artist signups close

Jan 12: Bidding opens

Jan 20: Bidding closes (and the new president is inaugurated)

Jan 31: Proof of donation due to your author/artist

Creator sign-ups were scheduled to begin on December 19, 2016. Five categories of fan works were eligible for the auction, including: fanfic, digital fanart, podfic, fanvids, and forms of fan labor, including beta reading and britpicking.[10] Notably, material fancrafts (such as embroidery or jewelry) were not eligible for inclusion in the 2017 auction. The organizers did provide recommended instructions for craft makers who wished to independently participate in the auction.[11] A dedicated fan crafts resource page was posted to the FTH Tumblr in early January.[12]

Within three days, FTH reported receiving about three hundred sign-ups from creators for a wide variety of fandoms.[13] When signing up, creators could select from a list of seventeen supported charities, or opt to let the winner of their auction select the recipient charity.

Creator sign-ups ended on December 31, 2016, at which point FTH reported that they would be offering over 700 auctions.[14] At the start of bidding, 544 contributor pages had been listed, offering auctions in over four hundred fandoms, with more contributor pages to be listed.[15] Ultimately, auctions were offered in over five hundred fandoms[16] by over five hundred creators.[17] To help bidders sift through the many available auctions, the organizers introduced the "golden needle" tag on January 17, 2017:

As you all have surely noticed, we have a huge number of people participating in the auction – and that is almost entirely great! But it does have one unfortunate side effect, which is that figuring out who to bid on is actually a lot harder.

We’ve gotten a lot of asks – a lot of asks – from bidders who were hoping to use the auction as a way to connect with creators in their fandoms whose work they don’t yet know. But with almost 700 auctions and over 400 fandoms, tracking those people down is a huge task.

That’s why we’ve come up with a way to help you do it.

We are currently going through every single auction post and tagging the less-active auctions so that it will be easier for you to find and connect with these brilliant, creative folks and avail yourself of their talents. The tag we are using is “golden needle”; because finding them on the offerings blog is like looking for a needle in a haystack (or at least it would be, without the tag!) and because each of them is a treasure whose participation enriches the whole project.

And there’s another reason to peruse the golden needle tag, once we have it up and running: if you are interested in bidding on a creator but don’t have a lot of money to spare, this is a great way for you to connect with a fellow-fan, to get the fanwork of your dreams, and to participate in this awesome multi-fandom venture without putting yourself on a ramen-only diet for the next month.

We will put up a direct link to the tag in just a few hours – please start using it then! And if you place a bid on a golden needle contributor, please drop us an ask and give us details about your bid, so we can keep the tag current.[18]

Bidding concluded on January 19, 2017, at 11:59PM EST.[17] In a post published on the last day of bidding, FTH wrote more explicitly about the timing of this auction, and the reasons for its existence:

Time is running out.

…For several things.

We haven’t talked much on this blog about the reason this auction is happening. But everyone here knows: tomorrow is a terrible day. Whether you are marching in DC, or closer to home, or watching the protests from your laptop, or trying to blot it all out by playing Candy Crush Saga, there’s no forgetting about it completely.

But we are not powerless. There are things we can do. Some of them start tomorrow. One of them is tonight.

This is our last night to raise money for the fantastic charities and organizations who will need our support so badly in the coming years. This is the last night to come together, across fandoms, to show the world – and ourselves – how powerful we can be, together, as fans.

These are the last few hours to put some money toward a good cause, to give another fan a project they can do to fight back, to give yourself something positive in the future, and to create fan works that will enrich our communities.[19]

On January 20, 2017, FTH announced that over one thousand bids had been placed.[20] Every creator received at least one bid on at least one of their offered auctions.[21] Auction winners were subsequently notified and given until January 31 to submit proof of their donation. Creators were notified by FTH as proof of their auction winner's donation was submitted,[22] and invited to add completed fanworks to a collection on Archive of Our Own.[23] Completed works were also collected on the FTH 2017 - Auction Offerings and Fanworks Tumblr.

Ninety-nine percent of winning bidders submitted proof of donation to FTH, and by February 2, 2017, FTH had contacted all creators to confirm their winning bidder.[24]

Results

By the end of the auction, $24,851 had been pledged by winning bidders, and some creators opted to offer fanworks to the second-highest bidder in their auctions.[25] On February 6, 2017, FTH announced that they had raised a total $32,002.85, and that the auction would return in 2018.[25]

Example Fanworks

Many fanworks created in fulfillment of Fandom Trumps Hate auctions have been publicly shared on a variety of public platforms (including Archive of Our Own and Tumblr). Some fanworks may have only been shared with the auction winner, and so may not be publicly accessible; similarly, fannish services offered as auction items are not easily tracked. The following are example fanworks posted to the Fandom Trumps Hate AO3 collections.

Further Impact

Fandom Trumps Hate has had a continuing impact, inspiring other fandom auctions. After Fandom Trumps Hate 2018, FTH offered to share materials with others who might be interested in developing a fandom-specific charity auction.[34] Fandom Loves Puerto Rico, a Dreamwidth-based charity auction in response to the devastation of Hurricane Maria cited Fandom Trumps Hate as one of their antecedents in their launch post.[35]

Fandom Trumps Hate - Action

On February 16, 2017, a Tumblr for Fandom Trumps Hate - Action was launched with an introductory post.[36] FTH-Action is described as "the social action arm of @FandomTrumpsHate," and provides updates on practical actions and political issues throughout the year.
