Can we have a Light Novel category, or should they go under books? --MegR 09:53, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

What are you thinking of as Light Novels? (As far as I know right know the bookish category includes everything from Horatio Hornblower and Diana Wynne Jones to (I think) Biblefic -- which seems broad/comprehensive. ETA the Rarelit page has a bunch of examples too.) --Sk 10:11, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
We have a Light Novel page that lists a few light novel fandoms. Are there likely to be a lot more? They can definitely be categorized under Books & Literature.--æþel 19:29, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Light novels are generally very short, and illustrated. A lot of animes are based on light novels. How many more there will be probably depends on whether Fanlore ever gets a lot of anime/Japanese fans. I don't really use the cats for browsing myself, so if you want them filed under Books & Lit, ok. MegR 19:49, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Toys?

We now have LEGO, Barbie, Transformers, and maybe some other fandoms that are principally toy franchises. How can we categorize these? I propose renaming Category:Games to "Toys & Games" and keep Video Games plus Tabletop RPGs as subcategories, since "Games" is already kind of a nebulous category. Or we could create a catch-all "Other Media" category like AO3 has? --sparc 00:27, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

subcategory rule cleanup

Can we remove the instructions from this page that say, "Unlike most Fanlore categories, these subcategories are overlapping instead of hierarchical; for example, although anime is a subset of animation, you can find all anime in the Animation category as well as in the Anime category."? This is terrible advice and makes it impossible to sort through the more general categories to see what new subcategories we might need. The "miscellaneous" fandoms that don't fit the sub-subcategories available would ordinarily be highly visible, but are now buried under a ton of anime and manga titles that already have their own categories.--aethel (talk) 19:26, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

This makes sense. On anime and manga specifically, TV Tropes groups Anime & Manga together due to the close relationship between the two mediums; maybe the same should go here for Fanlore? It's something to consider; while TV Tropes is not a wiki dedicated to fandom like Fanlore is, it is arguably a fannish site given its subjective pages and celebration of media. I admit I'm a little confused by the statement, is it saying that anime is a sub-category of animation, or that all animation should include both the anime and animation categories? -- Kingstoken (talk) 20:46, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
Anime is a subcategory of animation, but the instructions are saying that anime titles should be categorized under both Animation and Anime. Example: D.Gray-man. I think the current arrangement also creates confusion about which category is a subset of which other category.--aethel (talk) 20:57, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
Okay, that explains why the animation category is so cluttered -- Kingstoken (talk) 21:13, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
OK, I have somewhat de-cluttered the Canon Types category structure. The Animation category still looks pretty big; I don't know if we want to create more country-specific animation categories or just leave as is. Most of the remainder look like U.S. cartoons.--aethel (talk) 02:24, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Diffusion notice thoughts

I think the diffusion notice might create confusion without further explanation. I think pages in this category should be for general list pages and genre pages, whereas pages in the subcategories should be for individual IPs/canons/media properties. The only time I can see an individual fandom-by-source-text would appear in Fandoms by Canon Type is if the editor wants to signal that they can't find a relevant format category for it.--aethel (talk) 17:56, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
