Reactions and Reviews

It's morning on the Enterprise, and when McCoy runs into Kirk and Spock in a crowded corridor his "medical intuition" goes "on yellow alert." Something is just a little off, though he can't quite put his finger on what the problem is. "What's gotten into both of your he asks his friends. Kirk answers (innocently): "I'm sure I don't know what you mean, Doctor." (But the rest of us can guess!) And the fun doesn't stop there: pretty soon Spock is speaking to McCoy in private and the Vulcan doesn't quite sound like himself: must be the Kirk influence at work. Great story: really funny, but not too silly and definitely within the bounds of reasonable characterization for Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. [1]

This is a fun, light and thoroughly delicious story. Since I have absolutely no ability to write “K/S lite,” I am in awe of those who do. Humor, without stretching characterization or descending into silliness, is rare, and this author is able to capture that with apparent ease.

The plot revolves around our ever-vigilant McCoy noticing the captain has a slight limp; he questions Spock as to the cause. I loved this: “Did he hurt himself doing some fool stunt on the planet yesterday that he didn’t tell me about? One of those accursed shoulder rolls or that flying-two-footed-kick thing he does?” Now doesn’t that bring a picture to mind? Spock explains...in exquisite detail. I am always wary when an author allows Spock to curse, but here not only is it in character, but Spock manages to remove any emotional context whatsoever from the words. That’s my guy! Of course, later we are treated to an intimate discussion between Kirk and Spock and discover just how “emotional” Spock can be. A sweet and tender scene.

As I said, a delicious story. And best of all, it’s non- fattening. Treat yourself soon. [2]
