Page Title Suggestions?

I want to make a page about fanworks which "feminize" male characters, but am quite aware of the problems with this label; many fans would define this practice not as feminization but infantilzation. While the page should certainly discuss this topic, I'm now left wondering what to title the page, and am hesitant about walking into a minefield. --MPH (talk) 18:04, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

How about "Alternate Portrayals of Masculinity in Fandom" or "Alternate Portrayals of Male Characters"? It puts focus on the male characters, and gives you freedom to explore all the aspects of the different ways fandom writes them? --Alex (talk) 19:06, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Moving Pages to Subcategories

Hi, I noticed you moved several pages to non-existing fandom subcategories. I created the missing subcategories Category:Highlander Fanfiction and Category:Stargate SG-1 Fanfiction. For future reference, please create the fandom subcategory before moving the pages because otherwise the pages just disappear from the fandom cats. --Doro (talk) 10:51, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

I don't know how to properly create the subcategories; I mess it up every time. I figured by getting them all in one spot (clicking on the red) would make it easier, and be a signal for help, for someone who knew what they were doing to assist. K/S Press 200

Hello,

Issue #200 came out in Sept. 2000, in the article there is a reference to a tableau created by a Ms Madrid in 2013, she may have perfected time travel but I am not feeling sure about that. I remember seeing the picture but I don't remember where. Any thoughts?

Eating the Evidence

Glad you liked the Hectograph entry - the last bit is anecdotal, but I have a friend who is a translator with a LOT of contacts in Eastern European SF fandom going back to the 1970s who can vouch for it. A lot of fans at that time also had political interests, and every now and again someone would get raided by the local police who wanted to be sure that there wasn't any illegal printing going on.

At that time you needed a permit to own e.g. a typewriter, let alone something like an actual duplicating machine, and while the police didn't actually care much about non-political stuff such as fanzines etc., they had to take action if they saw actual machinery. Using this process meant that with a couple of minutes to get rid of evidence the police could honestly say they hadn't seen any machinery etc., nobody worried too much if there was a pan soaking in the sink, and a slight smell of alcohol or some odd-coloured pens or carbon paper lying around.--Marcus Rowland (talk) 15:55, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

I LOVED that anecdote. I ran across a comment by some Russian fans in the 1980s that talked about throwing their (hard-won) VCRs out the window when the authorities got too close. That seems to tie in with what I remember her saying. At a UK fanzine con a few years ago they did a program item on printing methods that included her demonstrating the process (but not the eating part, because apparently it's pretty horrible, boiling or flushing the evidence is much easier). I actually have personal experience of quite a few pre-photocopying printing methods, not so much from fanzines but because I used to be an educational technician and had to do some of my department's exam papers etc. We used everything from spirit duplicators (hand-written and typed stencils) through ink duplicators (stencils typed, thermally scanned, and at one stage dot-matrix printed) through the big automated scanner/printing machines and eventually photocopying, a lot of hand collating, etc.. Same Title Clashes?

I noticed that you posted an article about a fanfic called "How I Spent My Summer Vacation" - not a story I know, but I do know at least one other story with the same title in the Lois and Clark fandom, I think it may have even been the same year. I'm not currently planning to write an article on it, if I did it would be for the series it belongs to, but it got me wondering how that would work - give it a title like "How I Spent My Summer Vacation (Lois and Clark fanfic)" and flag it for disambiguation? Marcus Rowland, it can be done a number of ways. One can set up a disambiguation page right away, which makes it easier for someone later who would want to make a page for the Lois and Clark story (or any other fanwork with that title). I often do that, though it has the potential of having a red link hang out indefinitely. Or, one can put a note on top of the pre-existing page, directing to the Lois and Clark story in hopes someone will make a page for it. I've seen it done both ways, and I don't really know which is preferred. I guess I like the first way better as it gets all the heavy lifting out of the way, doesn't privilege one fanwork over another, and the eternal optimist in me believes someone will come along and make a page once they see the gap. --MPH (talk) 21:57, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

due south fanfic pages

The Due South fanfic category has over 200 pages already--do we want a due south-specific template? Also, do we want subcategories for F/K or F/V or slash fics?--aethel (talk) 15:39, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Sure on the template. Subcategories would be good, too. I have a hard time sorting the Rays out when they aren't specifically labeled, so that might be difficult for me.

I know these Due South individual fic pages need more work. I went back and added a bunch of wikilinks to a lot this morning. I vacillate between adding the subcategories now, or after I'm "done" with the bulk of this project; sometimes I find it easier to work down a completed list in a systematic way, than to ponder, and switch out stuff, as I go.

Thank you for working on this with me, aethel, and for adding the things you are. It's more fun to do it with a buddy, and it's a relief to know that someone is keeping an eye on me. I really, really appreciate it. :) --MPH (talk) 15:46, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Template for writing about a semi-pro publisher?

I want to write something about Beccon Publications, a small publishing house which has published quite a few fannish works (filk books, Drabble collections, etc.) but also publishes critical and academic books etc. I don't think it quite falls into the fanzine publisher category because it's a semi-pro business, I was wondering which template would be best. Label, Tag, Header

Right now, we have is a page for Header, and Label redirects to it. "Tag" (and its variations: "tagging," "tagged" don't have a page). I'm thinking "Label," "Tag," and Header," are three different things. Yes? No? --MPH (talk) 00:20, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Not so familiar with "label"; but tags and headers are certainly different. Headers tend to follow a format, more or less; but tags can be quite variable. There are some truly idiosyncratic tags on AO3, often intended to be humorous. --Greer Watson (talk) 00:39, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
