Ugly Betty was a dramedy on ABC from September 28, 2006 to April 14, 2010. The series focused on the character Betty Suarez, her family, and her job at an insanely over-the-top fashion magazine named Mode. It was based on the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea. Betty was played by America Ferrera.
Canon
Betty Suarez is a 22 year old Mexican-American woman from Queens, New York with a good heart and a horrible fashion sense. Her family is her father Ignacio Suarez, older sister Hilda Suarez, and nephew Justin Suarez. Her boss is Daniel Meade, the sweet man-whore editor of the magazine (most of the time -- there are endless machinations) from the family that owns the magazine.
Her antagonists are Wilhelmina Slater, (a crazy schemer who devises numerous plots to steal Daniel's job and seize control of his family's company), her loyal assistant Marc St. James and Mode receptionist Amanda Sommers.
Ugly Betty Fandom
The show didn't evoke a lot of fannish activity. But it had a very devoted following, possibly because of the out gay character of Marc St. James, possibly because Betty was just that cool. Probably the biggest pairing was Daniel/Betty.
