S.H.A.D.O. United States Central Control Monthly Status Report is a UFO monthly 2-page newsletter with at least 49 issues.

This is a sister zine to SHADO Handbook.

Two Clubs

There were two early U.F.O. fan clubs: SHADO-USECC (United States East Coast Control) (began in 1979) and SHADO-USCC (United States Central Control) (began in 1973).

Fan Comments

A fan in 2001 commented:

>I got the newsletter this week also. While not a longtime member of the club, I had no real intention of resubscribing next year, as it seems that most of what is in the newsletter comes from your site or this list.

Yes, that's true. In the "old days" (before my UFO website existed), the articles I wrote in the SHADO-USECC newsletter were unique. These days, there's a lot of duplication between what's on the Internet and what's in the newsletter. Also unfortunately, with my limited time, my website suffers because of all the time I spend on the newsletter. In fact, in the past year, I think I've spent more time on the newsletter than on my website! [1]

In 2003, a fan commented about the online posting of the newsletters:

Thanks for posting all these SHADO-USCC newsletters, Bill! I've got a bunch of these as well (although I wasn't a member at the time), and when I first got them I was rather surprised that the content seemed to be 90% club administration details, with only about 10% "real" content. I think the subsquent UFO fan clubs did a better job with content (e.g., the ones with the "Interceptor" newsletters, and also SHADO-USECC did a pretty good job at this during Helen Weber's term of being in charge) -- Marc [2]

OCTOBER 1973

Welcome to the membership of SHADO U S Central Control. This is the first of the Status Reports you will be receiving monthly. Cmd. Straker sends his best regards to all new members and hopes that you will all enjoy being a part of SHADO. This is your club and we, your officers, want you to participate in its running and have fun with it. We are here to help; any suggestions or criticisms are welcome as we want to do as good a job as possible, and we need your help to do so. If you have friends who also watch UFO, get together with them and form your own Control base. If you wish, you can submit details of your organization to us and we will pass the information on to the other fans via this report.

We also want to publish reports on actual UFO sightings. If you see one, get all the details you can---size, distance from you, speed, direction and send it to us, If you can, make a simple sketch of the UFO, as there are a number of different types, and SHADO scientists believe each has a different function in the alien scheme of conquest. We would also like all of you to collect any newspaper or magazine articles that are printed on UFOs. These will become part of a permanent reference collection kept by SHADO - USCC.

Contributions of fiction---short stories, anagrams, jokes, etc. dealing with UFO and SHADO will be gratefully accepted. Be sure to keep copies of all printed work. Never send your only copy of anything through the mail, as it is not known for its efficiency. As to artwork, we would like drawings of all the stars, and, if any of you are so inclined, we will accept technical drawings of SHADO equipment and vehicles. Cartoons, too. But be warned! The Commander likes to keep pictures done of himself. So if you want your work returned after we have copied it, please enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope and instructions to that effect. We will print as much as we can, but budget and editorial policy will be factors. Don't be disappointed if your work is not printed right away. Be patient. We will get to it as soon as possible.

Membership cards will be sent to everyone as soon as SHADAIR MAIL can get them here. The Commander is signing each one himself, and that takes time. But everyone should get one with the next Status Report.

Looking forward to your continued participation;

DALE E. JONES Colonel, Internal Security

SHADO, U. S. Central Control [3]
