Tyrion Lannister is a fictional character from A Song of Ice and Fire, and is played by Peter Dinklage on the HBO television series Game of Thrones.

This guy is a dwarf in a time and place where size and skill at arms are hugely respected. However, he does not let it become a weakness and uses his wits to far greater effect than a warrior uses his sword.[1]

Canon

Tyrion Lannister is the youngest child of Tywin Lannister and younger brother of Cersei and Jaime. He was born a dwarf and his mother died during childbirth, which led some to believe he was cursed. Both his father and older sister blame Tyrion for her death. Despite his family's high status, Tyrion is often looked down upon because of his stature and appearance. Because of this, he learned to use his wit and intellect to help him overcome the prejudice he faces.

Over the course of the series, he serves in various positions of power, including, but not limited to, Hand of the King. While still living in King's Landing, Cersei accused Tyrion of murdering her son, King Joffrey. He was found guilty when Oberyn Martell, who was Tyrion's champion, lost the trial by combat to the Mountain. Jamie helps Tyrion escape before his execution, but while doing so Tyrion comes upon his father and murders him and the servant woman, Shae, that Tyrion was in a sexual relationship with. Tyrion then goes to Essos.

At this point, the book series and the TV series diverge significantly.

Fandom

Tyrion Lannister is a popular character with both book and TV show fans. However, due to the diversion of the TV show, the reasons for his popularity may differ.

Some TV series fans consider him the best of the Lannisters despite his callous attitude, citing his consideration for Sansa Stark during their marriage and seemingly genuine desire to see the realm succeed. In the TV series, he is also the only Lannister from his immediate family left alive at series end, and he is raised to Hand of the King. This may help to cement his popularity in a series where many people die.

Theories

A + J = T: This theory posits that Tyrion is not truly the son of Tywin Lannister and Joanna Lannister, but instead the son of Aerys Targaryen and Joanna Lannister.

Tyrion will be a Dragonrider: Some fans believe that Tyrion will become a dragonrider in the final books of A Song of Ice and Fire.
