Tunnels of Love is an explicit het adult Beauty and the Beast (TV) anthology. It required an age statement.

From an ad in Datazine #56: "THIS IS A SCORCHER!...an adult X Beauty and the Beast fiction fanzine that sizzles with romance and passion. It will not be sold to anyone under 21 years of age."

Tunnels of Love 1 as published in June 1989 and contains 113 pages.

The covers and interior art are by Sharon Wells and J. Ley. It was edited by S.E. Seliger.

From the editorial:

What a lovely idea. . . a romantic excursion into the lives of two of our favorite characters: Vincent and Catherine of "Beauty and the Beast. Combine it with themes of hurt-comfort, weekend-getaways, parties, returns from the darker side, and what do you have? Some of the most enticing moments possible.

All themes lead you down the same road. . . a road branching from the slow endless straight road the series has developed, into the nooks and crannies from our prolific and definitely not tepid imaginations.

The artwork by different artists reflects not only the themes of these particular efforts, but the atmosphere of the entire offering. Drawings to blend with the imagery of the written pictures.

You may suspect as you read on that some of the authors have decided to employ "nom de plumes." This I will confirm, although as you continue, you will see that this is definitely not to "protect the innocent". Occasionally they are an inside joke, or a private statement.

Have a warm, spicy read. Perhaps in an oil-scented tub with candles lit, or a flower-filled boudouir [sic]...does anyone really have one of those? It might be invaluable to actually see one for research.

Research. Of course. "That's the ticket..." The ticket, that is, for a sensual trip to savor and return from at once euphoric and refreshed.

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

First try in this series, considerably less polished than what follows. Iffy spelling, occasional dubious grammar, typos, pretty primitive art (J. Ley an exception), for instance.

Generally, in these stories, two fairly generic people who happen to be named Vincent and Catherine have sex. No hangups, no insecurities, no issue of difference. Just a good roll in the hay and then smile a lot.

In one story (“Between Dusk and Dawn...” by Linda Virginia Shelley) they go out to dinner, then have sex. And that's the whole story.

People tend to have “orbs,” rather than eyes. Lots of “throbbing” this and that.... You get the idea. However, the three linked stories by Catherine Victoria Lee have a little more substance. Overall, pretty basic stuff here. It helps to have a flexible and robust sense of humor. Lots of fans have gotten great (if unintended) amusement and delight from this zine. Great for sleepover meetings and late night communal readings at cons.... [1]

Not for the faint of heart romantics, This zine does not pretend to be anything other than what it is - sex, sex and more sex.

The cover art is by Kathy Costello. The interior art is by Pam Martin, J. Ley, Susan Perry-Lewis, Sharon Wells, and Holly Riedel.

The art by Susan Perry-Lewis was reprinted in Snowbound, A Path Not Taken, and The Swan.

From the editorial:

Your cards and letters were full of enthusiasm for 'Tunnels of Love." so we were bound to put out a sequel. Many of you will be happy to see I have not included any of my pen and inks this time!

[...]

Special thanks go to all of those who have contributed to this fanzine With their time and talents. I trust the readers will find the stories to their liking. even if they are a bit different from the first volume. We had set a rule. "No First Time Stories," but we got too many wonderful stories that broke the rule. So you'll find 'The Swan." 'Though They Go Mad..." and 'The Summer of Futures" all break our rules. and I think you'll be glad they do.

  • Though They Go Mad by Catherine Victoria Lee ("This is a re-telling of "The Rest is Silence" with behind the scene looks into what went on in Catherine's apartment while Vincent was lying ill there, and what really happened in that tunnel!") (1)
  • A Slight Case of Deceit by Lynne Roberts (28)
  • The Swan by Lynne Arthur ("Vincent is afraid to give his love and believes it is best for Catherine if she finds someone else... Devin perhaps? His brother and a poem help him see the errors of his way.") (reprinted in Snowbound, A Path Not Taken, and The Swan) (41)
  • Sweet Revenge by Linda Mooney ("A simple practical joke escalates into fiery passion. Who will cry "Uncle!" first?") (80)
  • Dreams in the Mist by Nena Rey ("Catherine and Joe are caught up in a dangerous case --- but where is Vincent when she needs him most?") (93)
  • Prologue: A Quadrilogy of Futures by S.E. Seliger (Author's forward: "The following pages were written almost a year-and-a-half ago. and in bringing them up in the last few weeks for editing and to re- read before submitting them, it was almost an eerie experience how some of the predictions paralleled third season. Perhaps the following represents an alternative third season as we might have liked it. although this one is far steamier than would have ever graced the screen. As you read, recall that these were written just prior to the second season, and our creative juices had just begun to run swift and strong and constant. If these stories are successful. the hope and joy of that time. that precious gift we were bestowed with. will peek through. and we can rejoice in that rebirth. I hope the following stories may give you a renewal of the wonder of that first year and the boundless expectations for the second. Remember that time? Perhaps they will give us back our hope for their future in whatever incarnation the moguls will allow. Forever. They will endure forever.") (123)
  • The Summer of Futures by S.E. Seliger (124)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2

Variations on a theme. One reviewer commended “The Swan,” by Lynne Arthur, in which V tries to satisfy C's sexual longings by sending Devin as a stand-in lover; another recommends “Sweet Revenge” by Linda Mooney, structured as an escalating series of V/C practical jokes culminating in sexual feelings transmitted through the (two way) bond. The art's better (compared to ToL-1), too, particularly that by Susan Perry Lewis. [3]

Second in the series exploring the physical relationship between Catherine and Vincent. Contains a variety of stories including 'Though They Go Mad' (what really happened in that cave) and 'Summer of Futures' which continues in Volume 3. Others include Catherine wanting to get pregnant and seducing Vincent; Vincent believing Devin could ease Catherine's sexual frustration; and practical jokes playing havoc on Catherine and Vincent. Explicit sex. Good art. [4]

  • In Days of Olde by Catherine Victoria Lee (104)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 3

C's pregnant quite a lot in this zine, complicating her and V's marital routines. But of course there's always what happens on the table in the Great Hall (“The Great Hall” by Nena Rey).... Vincent as a gothic menace/lover complete with whip will startle some folks. Dream sequences, occasional poetry, no first-time stories. Four connected stories by S. E. Seliger have the most perception into the characters, if that's what you're looking for. Another reviewer picked out the fiction by Catherine Victoria Lee for special commendation.[5]

From the editorial:

Once again we are given the opportunity to glimpse all the

"might have beens" in the romance and wonder that is "Beauty and the Beast." While we keep writing those letters, thinking positive thoughts, and keeping our fingers crossed in hopes of a movie we all can enjoy - perhaps even an opportunity to see a little more of Vincent - let us keep dreaming the dream.

Certainly his Vincent is one Catherine can only dream of.

  • Massage... Therapy by Kathy Babcock (53)
  • My Gentle Beast, poem by Nina Thomas (63)
  • The Knight of Her Dream by R.A.H. (64)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 5

Concentrates on V/C's ongoing sexual relationship rather than “first time” stories. Jacquelyn Kapke's “Have My Way with You” offers some interesting psychosexual insights; “The Knight of Her Dreams” by R.A.H. is a frame story linked to the conclusion of “The Outsiders.” C dreams herself a medieval lady ordered, by King Arthur, to marry his loyal knight, Vincent D'Valles. She becomes reconciled to the idea.... Variable art by Joan Ahlstrom, Barbara Gudlauski, Jacquelyn Kapke, Sharon Wells, Sherri White, and Alice A. Baltes (excellent). Other contributors are Lee, Nina Thomas, Linda Mooney, Anne Evans, and Kathy Babcock. [7]

Issue 6

Tunnels of Love 6 was published in October 1991 and contains 111 pages. It was edited by Sharon Wells and Catherine Victoria Lee.

The art is by Alice Baltes, Barbara Gudlauski, Jackie Kapke, and Suzan Lovett.

Lovett's art is "Reflections," a color picture of nude, frontal Vincent.

  • Sleep My Love by Pearl Harris (1)
  • If I Were, poem by Nina Thomas (8)
  • Mrs. Elliot Burch by Ann R. Brown (9)
  • My Worst by Linda Mooney (18)
  • The Rest Does Not Have to Be Silence by Jackie Kapke (20)
  • It Doesn't Diminish by Jacquelyn Kapke (82)
  • Snowplay by Randie Pressman (85)
  • Aftermath, part one by Catherine Victoria Lee (101)
  • Reflections, poem by Sharon Wells (110)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 6

Standout story this time is “The Rest Does Not Have to Be Silence” by Jackie Kapke. A spinoff from “Ceremony of Innocence,” the story has V collapsing, then slowly recovering, in C's apartment. Perhaps more details about V's bathroom habits than you really wanted to know, but much loving concern and insight, as well. Besides, of course, explicit sex-in and out of the shower. Also fiction by Kapke, Pearl Harri, Ann R. Brown, Linda Mooney, Randi Pressman, C.V. Lee; poetry by Nina Thomas, Sharon Wells; art by Alice Baltes, Barbara Gudlauski, Jackie Kapke, Susan Lovett (with a color picture of nude, frontal Vincent viewing himself in a mirror.)[8]

Issue 7

cover of issue #7, Sue Krinard

Tunnels of Love 7 was published in April 1992 and contains 98 pages.

The art is by Rosie Badgett, Alice Baltes, Jacqueline Kapke, and Sharon Wells. There was a fifth name in the zine that was eradicated; this might be Sue Krinard who is not credited in the zine, but is the artist listed on the front cover.

From the editorial:

Thank you for once again supporting this endeavor. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the start of

Beauty and the Beast and it is the continued support of fans, like yourself, who are Keeping the Dream Alive. Its flame burns within our hearts and it must be cherished and fed, like any fire, to continue to bring us its light. Perhaps you haven't looked at it this way, but for those of you who don't write or illustrate these fanzines, in buying them you contribute just as much, for without your backing this fanzine could not be made. So my sincere thanks to all of you. Even as this issue of Tunnels of Love goes to press, there is another in the works and I hope to have that ready by early summer.

  • Something That Has Never Been, poem by Sharon Wells (56)
  • Dreams Can Come True by Lizabeth Allen (58)
  • We Are One by Jackie Kapke (75)
  • Two Dreamers by Donna Vasquez (84)
  • Could It Be Fate by Donna Vasquez (95)

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 7

Contains “Aftermath,” by C.V. Lee in which C dreams a SF tale of crash-landing on a planet where guess-who lives. Romance ensues. Later, V spends time reading steamy romance novels, he and C discuss them, then go to bed. In Kathy Babcock's “Over the Rainbow,” we find, to our astonishment, that the world Below has strict rules against cohabitation by unmarried couples, enforced by a kind of morals police that peek into chambers at night. How awkward for V/C! In Babcock's “The Rehearsal,” V/C get more into...and out of...a love scene than anybody'd expected. Other fiction by Linda Mooney, Lizabeth Allan, Jackie Kapke, Donna Vazquez. Poems by Sharon Wells. Art by Rosie Badgett, Alice Baltes, Jackie Kapke, Sharon Wells. [9]
