The Mentalist was an American crime procedural about the titular mentalist and former conartist/fake psychic Patrick Jane who works as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation.

The show's mytharc follows Jane's quest to hunt down (and kill) the serial killer Red John who murdered Jane's wife and daughter. The other main characters include Jane's boss, Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon, and her team Kimball Cho, Grace Van Pelt, and Wayne Rigsby.

Popular Pairings

The most popular pairing by far is Jane/Lisbon, which makes up the bulk of The Mentalist fanfic being written. Other popular het ships include canon ships like Rigsby/Van Pelt, Jane/his wife, and Cho/Summer. Jane/Van Pelt was also fairly popular during the first season.

The most popular slash ships are Jane/Cho, Jane/Red John, and Cho/Rigsby, though none of these come anywhere near the popularity of Jane/Lisbon. There are also some Lisbon/Van Pelt and Lisbon/Hightower fics around, but in all femslash is almost non-existent.

Fandom and TPTB

The show's writing staff have a joined Twitter account (MentalistWriter) that they use to interact with the fans. Many of the other cast and crew members are also active on Twitter.

Controversies

When the show first premiered, there was a backslash from the Psych fandom who accused The Mentalist of copying Psych since both shows had a fake psychic as a protagonist.
