Excerpt from "Time Guild"

Jennie explains her visitors to Ray:

"Mara and Bagoas are my adoptive grandparents. That is to say, they're my multiple great-grandparents. My family traces back to five little boys Bagoas bought at a slave auction in Menfe. Mara and Bagoas have always checked up on their descendants, and they are always Girandpa and Grandma. They've always been there, you see?"

It was plain that he didn't see.

"They belong to the Time Guild. Of course you don't know about that, but Time Guild agents move through history 'fixing' things—a little bit like Dr. Who. No one knows where Mara was born or when but Bagoas started out as Alexander the Great's Persian Boy. Someday, I may join the Guild, too."

Doyle didn't say anything, just looted at her with dazed incomprehension.

"Oh, dear." Jennie bit her lip. "Well, I guess we'll just have to show you." She dragged him back into the living roon where Bodie and Bagoas were eyeing each other warily, and Mara awaited the outcome.

"He doesn't believe me," Jennie announced.

"Of course not." Mara nodded. "After all, he's a rational man."
