The Hutchinson Finger is the term fans use to refer to the digit Hutch often holds up as a warning.

An Early Use of the Term

From a Dobey Con convention report in S and H #21 (1981): [During a viewing of the episodes "Shootout" and "Survival"] "... the whole audience broke into spontaneous applause during the latter, when the Hutchinson Finger made its appearance. This had become something of a standing joke, with almost everyone giving impressions of Hutch's digit."

Some Fiction Examples

From Starsky's Sort of Thing by Sam KW (samudee): "'Yeah. I would say, 'Hey, Hutch. We should do this more often,’ and then you would give me that 'don't even think of it' -look, and raise the Hutchinson finger. I would ask, again, without giving up. Then you'd yell, 'Are you out of your mind?' But now… you're the one saying that we should do this more often. It aint' right!""

From It's a Wonderful Life? by Dana Austin Marsh: ""No, you wouldn't," Hutch accused, the Hutchinson finger coming into play to emphasize his point, a gesture damned near guaranteed to jack Starsky's temper well past boiling point.""

From Home for the Holidays by Sue Beck: ""I’m serious, Starsky. Don’t say it. Don’t even think it, you hear me?" The Hutchinson Finger made its first appearance of the evening."
