The Eaten One is an Earthsea vignette by Daegaer. Written in March 2003 for cangetmad and published in her personal livejournal and on the Silverlake list, it is one of the earliest online stories in the fandom. It is a character piece centering on Tenar and her relationships, which largely draws on The Tombs of Atuan and can be read as a subtle feminist critique of the source material.

The author's summary is: Tenar does not yet realise how much she has to lose.

Firerose recorded a podfic of the story in 2012 for Podfic Bingo; it is just over 6 minutes long.[1]

Reception and Reviews

'The Eaten One' was well received, with readers appreciating the characterisation of Tenar and the feminist slant to the piece. Espresso Addict has credited the story, together the author's The Dark of the Moon, with introducing femslash readings of The Tombs of Atuan,[2] a popular trope in later fanworks.

Espresso Addict recommended the story in 2004, writing: There isn't a lot of Earthsea fanfiction, and this unusual little vignette is among the best I've encountered.[3]
