Excerpts

I’ve been in fandom nearly eighteen years…oh my, has it really been that long? *blinks* Okay, yes really, makes me feel somewhat ancienty, to be honest ;) ...I started out with classic Star Trek (K/S) after a friend begged me to translate a story for her. I was surprised, in a very good and enjoyable way, to find out that there were people out there who thought like me! The [ Gayle F ] pictures were quite… interesting, too. The first fanfic I ever wrote was for ‘The Professionals’, and it was – at a rough guess – written fifteen years ago. I would have to dig out the Zine to be completely sure, but at the moment all the fun stuff is resting in packing cases…After Pros there was DS9 (Garak/Bashir), Due South (Benny/Ray Vecchio), Star Wars:TPM, and a small detour into Anime fandom, especially Weiss Kreuz (Yohji/Aya) and Pet Shop of Horrors (D/Leon). I tried to resist the Stargate Atlantis hype successfully for two years, until a friend of mine talked me into reading two stories she simply knew I’d love. So I thought: what could happen, you’re not in the mood for a new fandom…yup, and that, as the saying goes, was that. Not only was I hooked, but I found myself getting itchy fingers and starting to write again, and this makes me very happy. I fell in love with Rodney’s bad people skills and John’s dorky smile and have yet to regret reading those stories ;)

[What I enjoy most about SGA]: Hmmm, I’d have to say the different approach on the ‘hero’ figures. There is Rodney as the reluctant hero who knows too much to step into danger lightly, who sometimes overthinks things and is - understandably – afraid, but in the end always comes through for his friends, definitely the character that endears the show to me most. I’m really fed up with all the shows where the characters look like carbon copies of each other, except for hair length or color. Rodney has his faults and isn’t always calm and collected. He apparently is someone people are either instantly fond of, or hate on sight… At least that’s the way with the people I usually watch the show with or with whom I talk about it. Without him, I think I wouldn’t like SGA half as much. And when he gets his ‘I’m bursting with excitement just ask me what I found out’ look, you can’t help but smile with him.

I like John, too, don’t get me wrong. The both of them just fit so well together and I really can’t imagine what SGA would be like without either one. Though John is prone to do the heroic thing, he doesn’t fall into the classical ‘hero’ role either, or at least he didn’t at the beginning of the series, and there is some nice character development here during the series, too. I just watched ‘The Rising’ again. The scene where John sits down in the chair somehow reminded me of the Disney version of the Arthus legend (The Sword in the Stone), the true heir of the kingdom reclaiming what is rightfully his after being disregarded and looked down upon… Don’t tell me; my mind is a very strange place, I know. *happy sigh* Ahem, yes, I also like the team as a whole. I started watching the series somewhere in the middle of season two before getting the chance to see the first episodes. Maybe that’s the reason I like Ronon better than I do Ford (or maybe it’s because I’m not that fond of the ‘puppy dog’ type he seems to represent for me). Ronon is fun, especially when interacting with Rodney or when he teases John about his physical prowess, or rather John’s lack thereof in comparison to himself. Teyla, as a woman who is held in high regard by her people, and who gives even Ronon a good thumping when he deserves it, is a great character. More so, because she doesn’t have to be rescued by the menfolk; instead she’s more than once the one doing the rescuing. And I love her ‘boys will be boys’ looks when John and Rodney get into yet another argument. Another character I like -- in combination with Rodney especially -- is Radek. I think of all the non-team supporting characters he’d be the one I would miss the most. I’m not sure why, he just grew on me and seeing him argue with Rodney about something is great fun.
