Should there be separate glossary entry for "trekker"? I'm leaning towards yes... Mrs. Potato Head 17:34, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

I think it's a bit excessive, unless there is more than three paragraphs to say about the difference. I think by now the fine distinction is somewhat obsolete, though a historical note is certainly interesting. I gather it is something like the connotations of fangirl today, and some fans not wanting to use that for themselves?--RatCreature 17:44, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
I think we can just leave it like this for now and someone who knows can some along and set it straight. Mrs. Potato Head 17:54, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
I added links to memory alpha and wikipedia discussing the issue (and wow, I had no idea that it was so widespread a contentious issue that the actors made statements about this...o.O)--RatCreature 18:22, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
It was. The first thing I heard about it was that only people not in fandom used Trekkie and that it was kind of derogatory and I should never ever use it. And I wasn't even in Star Trek fandom! --Doro 18:34, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Seriously? Huh. I don't think I've ever had anyone explain that to me. And I mean, I've read Star Trek fic and sometimes posted about Trek series for ages, though until the Reboot it never was a major fandom for me.--RatCreature 18:44, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Textual Poachers actually begins with describing the difference between Trekkies and Trekkers. That's what the first 10 or so pages are about because Trekkies refers to the media constructed stereotype and here he was, trying to study fan culture. Oh noes! --Doro 19:23, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

I added a note about a newsletter using the word Trekkie as a counter example, but if it was renamed after two issues, maybe they did decide that "trekkie" was offensive?--æthel 17:01, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
