Is there a place for Doctor Who's phonebook/TARDIS on this page? --Mrs. Potato Head 20:10, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I think if we created a separate page for Telephones in Fanworks, it could fit in a section on canon references to telephones that generate lots of fanworks. --æþel 20:18, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Text Fic

I think the "Phones in Fanworks" section should be expanded. There's a lot to say about the evolution that's led to the current popularity of Text Fic, which are really popular but often still inexplicably avoid actual phone calls. That kind of avoidance of phones is also pretty interesting wrt Soulmate AUs, while phones are also used often for works about long distance relationships, phone sex, phone sex hotlines, etc. – caes (talk) 01:05, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

The page would benefit from some more on cell phone usage/texting in fanworks in the context of that evolution, definitely. Since this page is supposed to be a general overview of phones and fandom, I think really specific information about text fic would be best edited into the page on that topic, which is pretty sparse right now. But maybe a subsection here with information on the rise in prevalence of phones in fanworks w/r/t cell phones and texting, since the article originally hypothesized that phones were rarely central to fanworks (which is not really the case at this point, since there's tons of text fic/fic where cell phones feature prominently)? (Although, that said, I've had a hard time finding fan commentary on that evolution, so we'd need to do some digging.) - Fandomgeographies (talk) 01:19, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
I'd like to second aethel's suggestion above to spin off Telephones in Fanworks into a page of its own - with a separate page, it would be much easier to explore this issue in detail. For example, I think that the BBC Sherlock fandom would get a whole subsection because texting is a key motif on the show and that's reflected in the fanworks. -- enchantedsleeper (talk) 20:37, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
I agree with the idea of a separate Phones in Fanworks page, since there's a ton to say about different tropes based on different uses of phones. – caes (talk) 20:48, 24 February 2019 (UTC)
Created Phones in Fanworks. We should figure out how to track the development of the device. – caes (talk) 23:04, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

what qualifies as a "telephone"?

while i agree that the 21st century section is probably necessary, i do wonder where we're drawing the line with regards to what qualifies as a "telephone" in fandom. currently the section lists amino, which i understand has a video chat function? i guess? it must be super recent honestly i don't remember having it when i was trying to figure out amino. anyway things like that and discord and facetime and the like are clearly related to telephones of yore but what about streaming and vlogging? what about things like roleplay via texting? social media? what qualifies as a "telephone" for the purposes of this page? also would a hybrid social media/phone app like line qualify? should this page also be talking about japanese people almost exclusively use email instead of texting?
