Did the dubs v. subs thing take off in Sailor Moon? I remember that was a thing in anime fandom in general, where dubs were seen as somehow more hardcore, or meant you were a trufan. --Betty 06:26, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure this tension existed WAAAYYY before Sailor Moon, although SM was (imo) an example of an early fandom that had a lot of "feral fans," in terms of it being their first anime. (It was, IIRC, one of the first anime to be aired regularly on network channels as a Saturday morning cartoon, instead of being on at 3am on some obscure cable channel.) And it did make a lot of people curious about anime-- they wanted to see more things like it (say, Magic Knights Rayearth or Fushigi Yuugi or Bubblegum Crisis.) So all of a sudden you had a bunch of anime fans who didn't *care* that SM was a dub-- they liked it anyway! Who wanted to read subtitles? Etc. (As opposed to the really hardcore fans who were studying up on obscure Japanese cultural references and terms of address and even learning Japanese so that they could better understand their fave shows.)
Now that I think about it, a "Dub vs. Sub debate" page would be an awesome page. Maybe "Anime/Dub vs. Sub" or something like that. I'm sure there's a ton of meta about this out on the intertubes. -- Liviapenn 06:38, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
This is a totally random thought, but man, SM was totally the HP of its day! A real gateway fandom for a lot of people, a whole new demographic of fans, a ton of "I'm the new exchange student from America" Mary Sue stories-- yeah, I officially just blew my own mind. Characters & Shipping

Anyone mind if I flip the original names back around to original order? Since the dub names are already included, the Western order is covered there. I noticed the character section also only talks about senshi and first season characters, but the poster is from Stars. Do we want to expand the section? Or would it be better to only add characters as people add pages about them?

There's no shipping section at all, so I'm going to go ahead and start one. Please feel free to add pages to it as you like.

And as a complete aside, I'm going to pull the AO3 links out from under "fanfiction", as the archive is stated to exist for fanworks in general, regardless of format. I'm also renaming the "Fandom" section to "Impact on English-Speaking Fandom", since the material in it is rather narrowly focused. -the old briar pipe (talk) 17:45, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Character Name Order

We should try to be consistent within SM pages about whether we use family-name-first order: see Haruka Tenou versus Tenou Haruka/Kaiou Michiru. Which is more common in Sailor Moon fandom? --sparc 19:02, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

That's a thorny question. Basically, there are 2 camps of Sailor Moon fans: fans who came in via the subs and fans who came in via the DiC dub from the 90s. The former use the original name order, e.g. "Hino Rei"; the latter use completely different names and western name order, e.g. "Raye Hino". While I think dub fans have slowly been fading and/or assimilating to the sub side of the fandom, I'm pretty sure they're not gone completely. -the old briar pipe (talk) 01:52, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Agreed that it's definitely a thorny question, I come from the 90s English dub time so I'm much more familiar with those names but at the same time I'm know most of the original names, but for me it was easier to just go to the English names or the planet they hail from (i.e. Sailor Mars). I think I'd actual kinda vote for titling the character pages "Sailor ___" (that way it could satisfy both maybe?). But I never read a lot or much Sailor Moon fic, I was more interested in the fanart and different graphics (I miss the layouts!!!) and learning more about what happened to the characters after the series stopped airing in the US and thus stopped getting officially dubbed. And I've only seen a handful episodes of S1 of Crystal.--Harpie (talk) 01:22, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
I don't know that fic should rule the results over other mediums, but I do think it's kind of odd to use the original names but not in the original order, as the dubs didn't even do that. It's sort of a compromise that pleases no one, I think? Sailor names would be fine with me, as a sub fan. Some minor characters never even had non-sailor names. That said, I've never really heard the ships given with sailor names - it reads kind of odd when I write them out like that. -the old briar pipe (talk) 00:06, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
