Is the source for this xkcd, or was "Rule 34" a pre-existing joke? Either way, I think we should mention the xkcd comic. --Penknife 12:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

It's from the "Rules of the Internet", by 4chan (or by /b/ specifically, I'm not sure). We can mention one or two places it's referenced, esp. since xkcd is so popular, but it's spread pretty wide. --Etothepii 16:28, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Who is it who draws up a big list of It Hurts My Brain pairings every year and challenges people to write them? That ought to get linked in here too, I think. --Betty 15:43, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Origins of Rule 34

I think there is a mistake with the origins being in 1993. The website being attributed didn't exist until 2004: https://4-ch.net/guide/view/history The dates on many posts on the site seem to have errors, with that one apparently being from September 5039, 1993. I don't know how one would find the real date. -- pajamas (talk) 03:29, 5 June 2021‎ (UTC)

I'm pretty sure I did that research, and it was a mailing list from 1993 archived to 4-ch.net. I absolutely know that the concept was pre-2004. -- msilverstar (talk) 20:38, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm not sure I see where it mentions being an archive of a mailing list. It looks like an archive of the DQN board, on which all posts are from September 1993 (a joke about eternal september: https://4-ch.net/dqn/kareha.pl/1372849946/170 ). I recall it being pre-2004 as well, but I'm not sure this date is correct. -- pajamas (talk) 04:48, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
If that's the case, then perhaps the 'day' number in the date is counting up from 1 September 1993, in which case it would be Tuesday, June 19, 2007 that the post was. Anyway, that wouldn't be the only chronology error in this article. Enable anon contributions you cowards (talk) 21:44, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
I'm willing to believe anything 4chan related could be lying on dates or anything else. I'll take that out. --msilverstar (talk) 04:01, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
  • I tracked down the geek notes via the Wayback machine, Rule 34 suddenly appears in the note after December 2005 and by April 22, 2007. --msilverstar (talk) 04:01, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
  • it's not on the German game thread, I wish we'd archived it
  • The Urban Dictionary's 2006 date looks legit, though the first time it shows up Wayback is October 2008 --msilverstar (talk) 04:01, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
