According to wikipedia Digimon is short for "Digital Monster" and it started out as a virtual pet like a Tamagotchi and balooned from there. In the stories in the tv series the digimons live in communication networks, can evolve, and defend their digital world against evil, together with some children, each of whom is paired with a digimon as their partner.--Ratcreature 23:22, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
