The Allure of Print

In 1999, the publisher commented:

A paper zine is the *real* thing, the prize. It was very interesting when I published Swords & Senses, the Net Edition -- one of the authors picked up her trib copy and held it to her bosum sighing, "it's so much more real when it's in print!" [2]

From the Editorial

Swords & Senses is planning two more editions, the Original Edition in which I’ll publish non-net, original fan fiction and the Crossover Edition, to be fondly titled Crossed Swords & Senses. Think of it as a Reese’s cup or "two great tastes that taste great together" (thanks for the analogy, Lorelei!). I’ve never been a big devotee of crossovers, at least before getting into Highlander and Sentinel, where I find I absolutely love them.

This issue will include not only Highlander/Sentinel slash crossovers, but stories in which either Highlander or Sentinel is crossed over with another fannish universe. (I personally think all the major characters in Wiseguy are Immortals...) Crossed S&S is open to fiction that has been previously net-publish and original stories. Submissions are being accepted now for a MediaWest premier of one or both zines.

Fanfiction has taken a new direction on the net, and to me represents furnish writing in its purest sense: stories are written out of the sheer love for the characters and the universe, and shared with other fans hungry for more of what they love. However, odd though it seems, not everyone is online, even in this last year of the millenium [sic]. Even if you are, you have to find the stories, download, reformat and print unless you want to spend 6 hours a day sitting at your computer reading. Also, as a long-time zine addict, I guess I just can’t give up my love of fanzines, fan fiction that you can hold in your hands, a volume of stories selected for the way they relate to each other as much as they relate to the universe they depict. Although these stories are available online, they aren’t "free" even there; you need to buy a computer, invest your time, print out stories, etc. In order to keep the costs down, I’ve done the printing myself here at the home of In Person Press and I assure you, this fanzine is a non-profit publication.

I’d like to thank all my wonderful contributors for entrusting their work to me. This zine has been a pleasure to do and to present All of the authors are gifted and I’m gratified to see their work published in zine form. Special thanks go to Killashandra for sharing her artistic as well as writing talent. All I had to do was ask and she enthusiastically provided anything and everything I could possibly want. Her art contributions grace these pages and give a fitting backdrop to the stories and her friendship is something I couldn’t do without.

Enough talk now though. Turn the page, get ready for some fabulous, well-crafted, sizzling fanfiction and start zoning out on quickenings yourself. Enjoy!
