Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a video game RPG created by BioWare that expanded into a series of novels and comics, and was followed by the sequel Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The Setting

KotOR takes place approximately 3500 years before the events portrayed in the Star Wars movies. The player has the ability to decide the main character's gender, appearance, and name, a common feature in BioWare games; however, this character was later defined as a white man in order to create a single canon that could be used in books and Star Wars: The Old Republic. The plot begins with the main character dreaming while the ship that s/he serves on is suddenly attacked by Sith forces. The main character manages to escape with the help of Carth Onasi, a pilot who survives the attack, and together they search for a Jedi named Bastila Shan, who they hope will be able to help defeat the Sith.

Archive of Our Own

On Ao3 Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has a small fandom size in comparison to other media affiliated with Star Wars. In comparison to the tag Star Wars - All Media Types which has ca. 240,000 works[1] Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic only has around 2,000.[2] Despite this the fandom is still largely active with new stories being posted almost every day. What stands out is that stories in which Revan is female are widely popular with ca. 680 works under the tag Female Revan.[3] It is the second most used character tag of the fandom. The most popular ship is made up of Bastila Shan and Revan be they male or female. Combined the two ships have around 480 works.[4][5] The second most popular ship features Carth Onasi and Revan.[6] After that the pairing of Atton "Jaq" Rand and the Jedi Exile is also popular with ca. 201 works.[7]
