Speakthetruth: An Exhaustive J2 Archive is an in-depth essay on the history of J2 fandom. Using the Storify blogging platform, the essay incorporates images, video, twitter and other text to document the growth of J2 fandom. Part timeline/history, part justification/explanation of J2 fandom, the essay was written to preserve how many fans came to embrace J2 as a FIAWOL.

The essay was written by someone who believed that actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were in a secret romantic relationship.

From the introduction:

"As far as I know, there exists no complete record of what a J2 fan has experienced in all the years of the show. So what follows is a timeline summarizing the events of all eight years of Supernatural surrounding its two lead co-stars. It's meant to serve as an J2 archive or library, detailing each event with a date, info, pics, tweets, article, links, videos, and quotes. Most of the focus is on J2 and the players around them, but it will cover show changes and larger HW shakeups in later years as it becomes necessary. If a tiny splash of "Time Capsule" feel snuck in, it's because we all have our experiences and sometimes they feel worth telling. There has been an incredible erasure of fan/show history the last couple years, an act that is rather ironic in a fandom built on the concept of urban legends coming to life. In its wake are attempts to rewrite J2 history. There are some people that have worked very hard to make sure this story is as inaccessible as possible to others. They'd rather see it replaced by their own "revisionist" history that best serves their own interests. But this stuff happened. Records of it are out there. Fans experienced it. And in many cases, J2 or other people directly connected to them responded to it. Denying said part of J2 fan history is disingenuous. Believe what you want to believe in the space between, but events that happened have happened."

Reactions/Reviews

Some fans found the site interesting, helpful or at least amusing. A few commented on the organization and thoroughness of the essay. And one fan even called it, possibly tongue in cheek, a work of art. Another called it "addictive" while yet another wondered if the essay was documenting a government cover-up.

"The author clearly put in a lot of time and effort into this story. I was thoroughly entertained."[1]

"I'm speeding through this and I never knew Jensen was at the panel where Misha bent over Jared to sign his t-shirt. The pictures of his reaction really do look like someone catching their spouse cheating. Epic yearning for this in fic now. I know I've read it somewhere. Help me meme![2]

"There's a J2 timeline here: storify(.)com/speakthetruth/intro There's some problematic stuff in it, I would say (I'll let people judge for themselves), but it's very comprehensive."[3]

"Ignoring their "J2" and the policy to bash everybody it was informative for a new fan like me."[4]

"Someone compiled all the tin-hattery since the start of the show in a timeline here: storify.com/speakthetruth/intro I went down that rabbit hole. Or skimmed through it, anyways. Go ahead and read the intro. J2 is a romance for the ages and tale of injustice and repression, apparently.[5]

"Somebody needs to record a dramatic reading of this intro post (http://storify.com/speakthetruth/intro) because holy crap that thing is a goddamn work of art."[6]

"That storify thing is like some sort of elaborate multimedia non-AU J2 fiction. So beautiful and well thought out. LOL."[7]

"I read through 2010 last night - OMG!!! So much stuff that I already knew/heard about, but seeing it all in chronological order??? And the stuff I didn't know??? (The ever-changing story of why Jensen lived at Jared's - holy crap!!) Really fascinating! I didn't even watch the videos yet, I'll read it again and watch them. Of course now it's jut after the weddings, it's gonna really get tough now."[8]

"wow, this thing is addictive and dangerous, you can totally get lost in it!"[9]

"I have no idea what I'm reading I think they're detailing the government cover-up that Jared Padalecki is an alien?"[10]

"I am excited to find people who see the truth through all the PR tricks. Have you read theSpeak the Truth storify? If you haven’t you should go and read it, it’s my gospel."[11]

The essay even garnered some interest in non-English-speaking fandom:

"uf: hace muchisimo que no me pasaba por aqui. Por si alguien no lo ha visto, les dejo un link que compartio Mslyth y me lo he robado :P

Es para enamorarse y reenamorarse del j'2 eso si es un poco largo pero si tienen un tiempito aqui esta

Yo estoy   :luv:"[12]

Others used it as an example of why RPS fanfiction should not be allowed and one fan demanded that links to the site should carry warnings:

"I’m sorry, but that site is, for me, the perfect example of all that is wrong (and disturbing) about the SPN fandom. What exactly is the ‘truth’ that’s being claimed here? Is the ‘truth’ that JP & JA are two guys who’ve worked together 9 months out of every year for the last eight years and, having shared such a life-changing experience, have become great friends who trust and respect each other? Is it the ‘truth’ that JP & JA are secretly shagging each other sideways and have been for years now, and they only got married and had children to throw people off the scent? Or is the ‘truth’ that some people just lack common human decency and anything even resembling basic respect and so decide to say ‘Hey, we’ll crap all over JA & JP. We’ll call them liars and ‘prove’ they’ve been consistently lying for the past eight years."[13]

"I am SOOOO glad that I read your comments before going to that site! If I had gone there, unawares, and found that kind of ridiculous "J2 is secretly gay and everyone is lying to protect them, even their kids and marriages are a sham to uphold the conspiracy" type propaganda, I would have been very, very angry. I have ZERO interest in this kind of clap-trap, and would have felt duped if I had gone there not knowing the sites contents in advance. Ending up on a site like that by mistake while cruising the internet is one thing, but being led there by a recommendation or by suggestion is another. Perhaps in the future, if we are going to post the link to a site, it would be a good idea to leave just a small description about what kind of information we might find there so that fans can make an informed decision about whether or not they would like to visit. Especially if that site contains what many believe to be controversial information."[14]
