Snow on the Sahara is a Supernatural fanvid by absrip. It is often cited as an example of the Evil!Sam trope. The vid inspired two stories: If We Burn Away by taelynhawker(2009) and Sorrow Enough To Drown The World by gestaltrose (2009)[1] and was nominated for the 2008 "Achievement in Innovation" in The Fourth Wall Vidding Awards.

Summaries and Notes

Vidder's summary:

Sam turned evil and made the world burn. This is the aftermath of evil!Sam, told from Deans POV. Sam was saved but the darkness is ever lurking. Sam seeks redemption with Dean watching over him.

Vidder's Youtube notes:

The song's not a typical SPN song, but it got stuck in my head together with a story that wanted to be told. And since I'm not a person to go against the mighty muse, well here goes. Sam turned evil and made the world burn. This is the aftermath. After Dean managed to save him, Sam, suicidal and plagued with memories and guilt, tries to find redemption, while Dean watches over him. Dean's POV.

Review at The Fourth Wall

4th Wall Vidding Award for "Achievement in Innovation"

In 2008, the vid was the focus of an extended review at The Fourth Wall Vidding Awards. Below are excerpts from the review. The entire review can be read here; [2]

"Nicky: We've had quite a few AU narrative entries in The Fourth Wall this year, and the emphasis of qualifying in the Achievement in Innovation category is generally focused on the ambitiousness of the narrative as well as how clearly that narrative is carried out. Snow on the Sahara excelled in both respects.

Brad: I think it's one of the most ambitious AUs I've seen attempted, and certainly the most ambitious that I've seen carried out in such a visually striking and impressive way.

Nicky: I love the audacity and coherence of the vid's premise - that Sam has already turned toward the dark side and has come back again, and the vid deals not with the fact of his turning dark, but the psychological aftermath.

Brad: The way in which the vidder paints this premise just grabs you from the opening image and never lets up. It's so consistent and unrelenting with its visual elements and how it uses repeated clips to weave it all together.

Nicky: From the very start, this vid utilises some stunning external source: a bird in flight, gorgeous aerial shots of landscapes, motifs of fire and cloudburst. All of this serve to be a beautiful representation of Sam's descent into darkness, cued dramatically by a specific layer of vocals."

Reactions/Reviews

It is officially the vid that will make me watch Supernatural. I have resisted so far because I don't do horror (I scare way too easily and the show has been a bit intense for me) but this is so beautiful I have to see more of the relationship. Plus Jensen is hot as fuck - that may be my real reason. There is hurt and angst and kissing and hugging - the vidder uses several manips and they are so good I really couldn't tell if they were manips or part of the show. Absolutely gorgeous. I usually don't do vid slash because fic can be so much more graphic (thus so much more fun :) and I'm not really into Wincest, but this one was done so well it just melted my heart. [3]

The vid manip of Sam and Dean kissing in the back of the Impala inspired another fan to create a tumblr gifset from the scene: the manipped scene in the Impala by Teamwinchesterbros500.[4]
Damn you're better than good. To evoke a true sense of emotion is an awesome power to wield and you seem to have done it to quite a few and with style! The story is beautiful and takes the watcher further into what MIGHT have bee/.to be. [5]

I'm so glad 'Snow on the Sahara' was one of your choices. Probably the best video I saw last year. I still watch it regularly and it still gives me chills. [6]

Gorgeous video, clever editing and manipping..especially the Impala scene! [8]

Best SPN/wincest vid I have seen ALL YEAR. :) Rock on, baby. [9]

The woman is a genius, no kidding. Without question the best Wincest vid that's been made in a very long time. The manips are perfect. I have so much love for this vid it's not even funny anymore ♥ [10]

This girl totally knows how to do her job. It’s angsty, it’s sad, it’s believable, it’s wincest. I still have shudder running through my spine when I hear this song, because the video and the images pop up in my head immediately. Plus amazing using of outside footage. [11]

There is not enough space in this post to explain all the reasons why I'm reccing this. It's pretty much beyond amazing and I can't stop watching it. It's gorgeous, stunning, unique, powerful, angsty, and, well, PERFECT. See for yourself! (Beware of Wincest!)[12]

I cannot say enough awesome things about this vid. Subject matter + incredible editing = instant bookmark.[13]

Another by absrip, the music, footage and everything about this video works so well with the story the vidder wants to tell.[14]
