SinpOzium ("Sinpoz") is an annual multi-fandom slash convention held in Sydney.

History

Born out of an awkward lull in a conversation, the first SinpOzium was organised for the June long weekend of 2000. It was held in a scout hall and attracted approximately 30 people. The second SinpOzium was held in a private home in 2001, while the third and fourth SinpOziums were held at the Sydney YWCA in 2002 and 2005 respectively. Since 2011, it has been run by erilyn and alasen.

In 2005, SinpOzium inspired fans living near Wellington, New Zealand to host their own weekend convention. Called simply Get Together, it has been held annually since 2005.

Activities

Activities have included games such as Fandom Celebrity Head and Slash Pictionary, discussion panels, fandom pimping, writing discussions, vid shows and BDSM Q&A sessions.

Playlist from the 2011 vid show can be found here. [1]

Articles About the Convention

The following article was published in July 2000 in Diverse Universe, a newsletter for Spaced Out, an Australian LGBT science fiction club that ironically held its own convention on the same weekend as the first SinpOzium (the Queen's Birthday Weekend in 2000). Excerpts are included below. The full text of the article can be found here.

"A draughty wooden RAAF cadet barrack in the western suburbs of Sydney hosted a slash fans' convention, organised by the tireless Bernice. The number of the participants - virtually all women - fluctuated between 10 and 40; their ages between 18 and 60; and they came from NSW, Queensland and Victoria.

There are six stages in the life of a slash fan:

  • watch action or SF shows featuring two team members or partners of the same sex
  • reconstruct the partners as a couple in love
  • read stories, written by more experienced fans, in which the couple make love while seeking out new planets or fighting villainous aliens
  • write your own stories and publish them in fanzines or on webpages
  • publish your own slash fanzine, or construct your own webpage
  • make your own songvid, taking significant moments between your favourite couple and adding a soundtrack with a song whose words fit the images or give them a new emotional meaning altogether."[4]

Presentations on Hawaii 5-0, the Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, reboots of older TV shows, Merlin, Justified, the ethics of RPF/RPS writing, the dilemma of underage slashers/porn writers, "Fictional incest: okay because it's not real?", podcasting, and Fanlore were all planned.
