History

While Sheppard and Woolsey didn't see eye to eye during 'Misbegotten' or 'The Return' (Woolsey's first and second appearances on Stargate Atlantis), they had a good start to their working and personal relationship from Woolsey's assumption of command in The Seed. Woolsey made a lot of newbie screw-ups; Sheppard countered Woolsey's "The rules are there for a reason, Colonel. If I can't trust them, then I'm not sure I can do this job" with a handshake, saying, "Welcome to the Pegasus Galaxy."[1] Later, in 'Inquisition', Woolsey gently turns down Sheppard's idea for an escape plan. "[N]ow that I know what the game is, I can play it," Woolsey tells Sheppard's captured team, and proceeds to ruthlessly manipulate the judges and gain their freedom, which earns him another handshake as Sheppard tells him, "I never doubted you for a second."[2]

'Inquisition' aired in the US on October 24, 2008, and the first Sheppard/Woolsey fanfic, Mr Woolsey's Guide to Etiquette in the Pegasus Galaxy[3] was posted by busaikko on November 1, 2008. busaikko wrote

Most of this was written before Inquisition, but I added stuff in because if you're going to 'ship the 'ship, you couldn't ask for a more slashtastic ending[4]

referring to the shared whiskey and cigars on a moonlit balcony at the end of the episode.
