In One Direction fandom, seeding is a term used by larries, who believe that Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are in a secret relationship. According to the "seeding" theory, 1D's management is planting ideas in the media to prepare the public for Larry's big Coming Out (CO).
lapelosa, who is a big larrie, explained larrie reasoning thusly:
Yeah, it’s based on the idea that people are going to trust the conclusions they come to themselves more strongly, so instead of telling people explicitly what to think, you put down the dots and let people connect the dots themselves. It’s what happened in earlier tmz press when they said that Briana is asking for a lot of money, she was a one night stand, and btw, Louis never got a pat test, and a lot of people went, uhhhhh Louis should get a pat test. It’s very commonly used in pr relationships–so a celeb will say on camera that they have a crush on another celeb, or they will follow each other on camera, not long before the full-out pr relationship happens (which is very often not explicitly confirmed to be a relationship, they just let the press and fans talk about it as if it is).[1]
The counter argument from anti-larries is that a lot of what larries label seeding is just gossip magazines writing about topics or even just throwing in keywords that will get them more hits. For example, 1dsuspiciousminds posted a Collection of recent H/L headlines where the articles were clearly unsympathetic to larrie theories, but included both names in the title as clickbait.[2] An article that makes fun of Larry theories may be interpreted as seeding by larries.[3] In 2015, an anon sent an ask to im-on-fire-now:
It's frustrating that so many media outlets shamelessly use Larry to get hits (like Sugarscape, Yahoo UK, Daily Mail Celeb, etc). Larries take it as proof that "everybody knows Larry is real" or whatever or say it's media seeding, when really it's just savvy media teams noticing and taking advantage of what fans respond to most passionately. They're celebrating their own exploitation and manipulation by the media.[4]
LiveJournal user cujoy identified two suggestive quotes from Harry[5] made during video interviews in November 2014 as the impetus for larries to develop the seeding theory.[6]
