A Scullython (also known as Scully Marathon) were annual charity fan events held by fans of Gillian Anderson and Dana Scully to raise money for NF, Inc. a charity supported by Gillian Anderson[1] between 1999 and 2008.

The Scullython originated from Order of the Blessed Saint Scully the Enigmatic. The event were held solely to the benefit of NF, Inc in May of each year, which is Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on the nerves anywhere in the body at any time. This progressive disorder affects all ethnic races and both sexes equally. NF is one of the most common genetic disorders in the United States, (one in every 3,000 to 4,000 births), even though not many people are familiar with it. Gillian Anderson's brother Aaron was born with the disease and died of complications from it in 2011.[2]

NF, Inc. is a US organization made up of independent state and regional chapters, providing support and services to NF families. In addition to assisting individuals and families. NF, Inc. works closely with clinical and research professionals who specialize in the treatment of NF.

Marathons held outside the US will made a donation to one of a number of international NF organizations. The most recent Scullython was held in 2008 and they were succeeded by the Fandersons, which raised money for various charities supported by Anderson.

History

Since 1998, the online community of X-Philes, through "GAWS", the Gillian Anderson Web Site, has participated in an auction with all the proceeds going to NF, Inc., a US organization which provides both support and services to individuals and families dealing with the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis. In 1999, the OBSSE joined GAWS in their fundraising and NF awareness efforts by hosting and participating in "Scully Marathons". We gathered together in cities all over the world and, after getting sponsors, spent the day watching 13 of our favorite Scullycentric episodes of The X-Files. The money raised from these marathons was donated to NF, Inc. as well as a several international NF organizations.

When Gillian Anderson heard about thr OBSSE efforts for this event she not only sent along a letter to be read before the marathons to the participants but also sent the following to the Order at its conclusion:

I want to compliment OBSSE for sponsoring this innovative project to call attention to NF during "May as NF Awareness Month."

And also a special thanks to all of the site coordinators and volunteers in the United States and internationally for your resourcefulness and hard work, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are not only heightening the public's awareness of NF, but raising much needed funds as well.

You are all doing an incredible job in your support of this worthwhile cause, and that in itself is a priceless gift for everyone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Participation

Group marathons:

The OBSSE hosts "group marathons" which are open to anyone wishing to join us. These take place throughout the month of May in cities all over the world and, in most cases, we watch between 10-13 (see also Ten-Thirteen Productions) "Scully-centric" episodes of The X-Files. People who attend are encouraged to make a donation themselves as well as getting others to "sponsor" them for the day.

Mini-Marathons:
Those who can't attend a group marathon are encouraged to hold their own "mini-marathon" during May, either in the form of a get-together or party with friends, or simply for their own viewing pleasure. Again, we encourage getting sponsors and once the donations are collected, you are asked to send them to the designated collection address.

Makeing a Donation:
If you can't participate in a marathon, we ask you to please take a moment and send a donation to the designated collection address.

Ordering a Marathon T-Shirt:

Some year's t-shirts and other merchandise like coffee mug, or mouse-pads were being sold with, on average, over half the cost going as a donation to NF Inc.[5]
