Scanlan is a fictional character played by Sam Riegel on a popular D&D web series Critical Role. He was one of the main characters in Campaign 1 and a member of Vox Machina. During the Chroma Conclave arc, Scanlan developed a substance abuse problem. After he died in a fight with Raishan and was brought back, he left Vox Machina and moved to Marquet and developed a crime boss persona The Meat Man. He later returned to Whitestone and rejoined the party for the fight against Vecna.

Fandom

Some fans didn't like Scanlan at the beginning of the stream because he came off a little sleazy and like a womanizer stereotype, though by the type Campaign 1 was ending a lot of people were appreciating the character.

For fans who started playing D&D after watching the show, Scanlan became the blueprint of how to play a bard, though (in a similar way to Matt Mercer Effect) people often try to emphasize that you don't have to be Sam Riegel to play a bard.
