Sayo is a main character in the video game BanG Dream!, as well as the anime of the same name. She is a third year high school student and the guitarist of Roselia.

Canon

Sayo’s desire to be the best guitarist is often eclipsed by the resentment she holds for her twin, Hina. Despite her efforts, Hina seems to match her achievements with ease. This inferiority complex is most notable at the start of the series. As the story progresses, Sayo continuously grapples with these feelings and eventually starts working to repair her relationship with her sister.

Fandom

Initially, Sayo was an unpopular character in many parts of the fandom due to her inferiority complex and resentment towards Hina, as well as her rather harsh, no nonsense demeanor. Some felt that she was too hard on her sister and bandmates, and found her difficult to relate to or sympathize with. However, as more stories focusing on this aspect of her character have come out, she's become much more well-liked. Many fans are of the opinion that she has the best character development in the series.

Shipping

Within Roselia, Sayo is often the odd one out due to the popularity of Yukina/Lisa and Ako/Rinko. Occasional pairings with Yukina or Lisa are seen, however Sayo is most often shipped outside of her band, with Tsugumi Hazawa being the most popular choice. TsuguSayo took off in popularity following the "Cooking Class Craziness" event, despite the two characters having few canon interactions prior to that. Some also ship her with Hina, particularly in the Japanese side of the fandom on sites like Pixiv. Within the English-speaking fanbase, it's much rarer and very controversial.
