Sax 'n' Violins is a gen 182-page anthology of fiction and art by Barbara J. Caldwell.

It was one of the very first print zines to include some net-published fiction.

front cover

From an ad in The Monthly: "A 1 shot, 1 author/artist zine... Genres covered: The X-Files, Highlander, SeaQuest, ST:TNG... Only ten pages ever on the net, the rest is unpublished before."

From the zine:

Welcome to the grand experiment...Hooooo Boy...Would you believe I didn't actually plan this little effort (er...not so little at this point). There I was, minding my own business when a rock leapt out and broke my ankle...which left me bored...and unable to drive...and going out of my mind. This is dangerous for an artist and writer with a new copy of CorelDraw 5.0 to play with. Strange things start to happen...

And happen... And happen... And happen...

If you’re wondering where the color came from, this zine was printed on an Epson Color Stylus Ink Jet printer, instead of a xerox machine. Some people may wonder why I made the choice to hand print this, but the answer’s pretty simple. I really wanted to do a zine that was very graphically oriented, and having spent years at this hobby, often unhappy with the reproduction, I wanted, just once, to do something affordable and packed with good looking graphics. Of course, this does raise the problem that if someone hates the illos, I can’t blame it on the xerox anymore. The only drawback for the audience is that you have to be a little careful. Don’t get the zine wet. A drop or two of water won’t hurt it, just mop things up,, but the ink will run if you take it in the shower with you (although what you might do with it in the shower, I do not want to know).

I tried to choose and write stories that are more action/adventure related than some zines choose to do because that’s what I like. I also admit to taking some liberties with characters, so if you happen to be an anti Scully/Mulder X-Files fan, or a major Richie fan, please accept my humblest apologies (and put away those flame throwers—please). Seriously, Remember, it’s only fiction, and not meant to be taken too seriously.

On another note, if you’re sharp eyed, you might spot a couple of cameo appearances in some of the stories by characters, actors or props from other shows or films. Let me know, if you think you’ve found them all. There are no prizes, but hey, I’ll know you were paying attention. As for why I did that, what can I say, late nights, too many diet Pepsis...it happens. I’d also like to thank everybody who helped out, lent suggestions when I hit writer’s block, or generally didn’t kill me when I probably deserved it (Thanks Laura).

Lastly, a plug. People occasionally ask me if I sell artwork. The answer is yes. So, if you’re interested in owning a piece in this zine, or in some other zine where you've seen my work, write and ask (I do recommend you send a xerox if at all possible—with over 200 things in print, I can’t always tell which work you mean, by description). I can also, for a fee, run photo quality color copies from disk. Write and ask for a price list, if interested.
