Fandom

The episode became very popular not only within the Black Mirror fandom but outside of it as well. As each episode of Black Mirror is self contained, new viewers did not have to watch previous seasons to be able to watch San Junipero. The episodes focus on Kelly and Yorkie relationship made it increasingly popular within queer communities.

San Junipero also came out in a time where many were discussing the prevalence of the bury your gays trope within 2016's TV season. There was some debate over if San Junipero counted as using the trope, however most viewed is as a subversion thanks to the happy ending it provided.[1]

Kelly/Yorkie has went on to become the fandom OTP of Black Mirror.
