The Screwz Awards stand for Slash Creativity Recognition for Entertainment and Writing in Zines. They were created by two fans, Angie Sutton and Lisa Martin to fill in the gap left by the STIFfie Awards which ended in 2000.

There once was an awards for slash talent in zine format. The Stiffies (Slash Talent in Fandom) were presented for approximately nine years, giving rewards to talented individuals in the slash community. Unfortunately, it was announced that the 2000 Stiffies would be the last (for various unspecified reasons).

Having appreciated the concept of having a zine-only award (plenty of web-awards out there), and liking the double-entendre of the name "STIFfies", in late 2001, the award committee set about creating a new award and trying to come up with an equally fun name.

Thankfully, one member owned a book entitled "The Odd Index", which - among other odd listings - has a list of euphemisms for sexual intercourse and various sexual organs. Looking through them for ideas, we finally came up with the acronym SCREWZ. We then set about creating this website and the nominations/voting procedures.[1]

Awards were split into various categories:

Achievement Awards

  • Artist of the Year
  • Poet/Filker of the Year
  • Author of the Year
  • Publisher of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement Award

Fandom-specific awards

  • artwork
  • poem/filk
  • short story (up to 5 pages)
  • story (5 to 20 pages)
  • novella (from 20 pages on)
  • novel (stand-alone zine)
  • overall zine (multiple items included)

Voting instructions and the Award FAQ are archived here.
