In fanfiction, the most popular pairing in this fandom is the incestuous and sometimes pedophilic pairing of Rick and his grandson Morty. This pairing is known as C-137cest, as C-137 refer to the dimension the main characters originally come from. Other works include reader insert fics, and other incestuous pairings. The canon existence of multiple Ricks and Mortys from different dimensions has also resulted in selfcest fics.

Incest

Some fans of the show do not like the prevalence of incest works in this fandom.

I've been sitting here trying to find a decent Rick and Morty fic, and you know what I found? Nothing but rape and incest all the way down plus some dude name Grunkle. Y'all made me lose what little faith I have in humanity. Rick was right in the first episode, the human race should be bombed from existence. Aliens should not have to suffer encountering us.[1]

There is a very vocal contingent of Rick and Morty fans who identify as antis and regularly clash with fans of incest pairings on sites like Tumblr.

A 2018 article by Vice, attempted to explain and discuss the prevalence of incest works, particularly Rick/Morty, in this fandom. The article pointed to the oversexualization of underage Morty, the inclusion of incest jokes, and the codependent relationship of Rick and Morty in the source material.[2] It also included quotes supporting incestuous fanworks made by creators and actors, and interviews with shipping fans and anti-fans. Following the article, many identifiable Rick/Morty fans who took part were permanently banned by Tumblr.[3]

Later in the same year, many more Ricky and Morty blogs were victims of the Tumblr Purge.

"The tumblr purge ruined a community full of incest, and that upsets me" Bruh
No. The tumblr purge ruined a community where fun, creative, supportive, and positive people could enjoy themselves through shipping, fandom, and artistic expression. Fictional incest shipping isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine but don’t make other people feel bad for liking something that you don’t; especially in adult spaces.[4]

Discussion & Controversies

McDonald's Mulan Szechuan Sauce

“To the day it all began, and ended, the moment that changed everything.” - Rick

In the Season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty, Rick is held hostage by the Galactic Federation, who send agent Cornvelious Daniel to invade his brain with a series 9000 Brainalyzer, who then attempts to coerce Rick into giving up the portal gun formula that makes interdimensional travel possible.

During the time they are in Rick’s memories, Rick takes government alien Cornvelious Daniel (voiced by Nathan Fillion) to a memory of when McDonald’s carried the Szechuan dipping sauce that was sold to promote the Disney movie Mulan in 1998. This sauce was later discontinued.

At the end of the episode, Rick reveals to Morty that his actions to save the world were actually solely for selfish purposes, including getting rid of Jerry, and his desires to reclaim the discontinued McDonald’s Szechuan sauce. This ending sparked the interest of viewers and it wasn’t long until the Rick and Morty fan base was sending requests to McDonald’s to bring back the Szechuan sauce.

On October 1st, 2017, McDonald's confirmed in a Twitter post that the Szechuan Sauce would be returning for a single day in U.S. restaurants, on October 7th, 2017. When the release day came, fans were disappointed as only some McDonald’s were given the sauce and in underwhelming amounts. Very few people were able to obtain the sauce and many of those that did turned around and sold it for hundreds of dollars online. This fan craze was the center of many tweets, posts, and memes making it one of the highlighted events in the Rick and Morty fan community.
