Richard Woolsey was introduced as a member of the NID in Stargate SG-1 in the season seven episode Heroes. He has an MBA from Harvard and was a lead council for the Army Corp of Engineers for 10 years.[1] He would later become the United States' representative on the International Oversight Advisory Committee (IOA). After Samantha Carter was recalled as leader of the Atlantis expedition in Search and Rescue, Woolsey was tapped to take her place and appeared for the remainder of season five as a regular character.
Richard Woolsey is played by actor Robert Picardo.
Fan Response
Some fans were very unhappy with the announcement that the new leader of Atlantis was a man. Prior to season five and the introduction of Woolsey, the top job had always been held by a woman, and there was unhappiness at the way the characters of Elizabeth Weir and Sam Carter were removed from the show. Many fans enjoyed the character as the season progressed and his character was integrated into the Atlantis crew.
In SGA, there is a small but dedicated group of Richard Woolsey/John Sheppard slashers.[2]
