Barb Cummings became involved in a local fan club for the alternative comic Elfquest in 1981, and from 1981 to 2003 was involved in writing, illustrating, editing, and publishing fanzines for several Elfquest fan clubs, most notably Tower Mountain Holt. Her sometime net alias 'Rahirah' is the name of a character she created for the Tower.

She became involved in online Buffy fandom in late season 5, and wrote "Boys' Night Out," her first BtVS fan fiction, shortly after the airing of "Spiral." During the summer between seasons 5 and 6, she started writing "A Raising in the Sun", the first installment of a huge, fully developed alternate universe branching off from "The Gift" with an alternate version of Buffy's resurrection from the dead. "The Barbverse" currently consists of two and a half novels, a handful of novellas and dozens of short stories spanning some four decades in the characters' lives. It's one of the best-known sagas in the fandom, and a B/S classic.

Barb also writes meta on Buffy, Buffy fandom, and the mechanics of storytelling. She's a member of Tea at the Ford and the plot-wrangler for their virtual season, Three Deep.
