Some Excerpts

Why do you think people especially women write slash fiction about real people? I'm thinking not just the hotness factor of 2 guys together but the fact it's 2 real people especially the fact they're famous and not necessarily gay in real life?

I will offer you my theory, qualified by two years of psychology classes and avid magazine reading. It’s much more natural to write about real people, because one knows that even if it’s only a one in a billion chance that you will ever get together with them, it’s a chance nonetheless --- unlike fictional characters. And when one develops an infatuation with or an attraction to a particular celebrity --- especially if it’s sexual in nature --- well, this is where the being female part comes in. Because women, since ancient times, have valued a monogamous mate (as opposed to men, who are programmed to seek out as many partners as possible) we don’t want to write about “our” man getting it on with another woman. So we make him get it on with another man. That is okay because we think about the other man sexually, too … and since in real life they’re not really gay, we can enjoy the sex scenes because we know they would never really “cheat” on us with this other man. It’s really a fine line between fantasy and reality...

Why write slash about well, Slash and the other GN’R guys. Particularly as they're perceived as a macho rock band and there was the whole homophobic controversy. Is it about subverting that i.e. doing something they would never do in real life as a kind of revenge almost or is it more simply the hotness. I’ll say I’ve been a GN’R fan since 1987 and I've always maintained they were never quite as straight as they played it, I think there was a deeply hidden homoerotic undercurrent to their work. In fact, I wrote about it in my fanzine Bambi in 1996. Why GN’R?

A psychology professor here at my college shared an article this year that revealed the results of a recent scientific study … men who were the most homophobic also were the most aroused by homoerotic material. And, like you say, there is definitely that undercurrent in their work, controversy not withstanding. And even though Slash is my favourite, I love exploring Axl as a character … he’s so complex in real life … I also like the very pronounced contrast between Slash and Axl --- physically and in demeanour. For me, it really has nothing to do with revenge. I also love their music and their image … and I think they’re very sexy.

You post your fic. on the 80s Metal Fanfic. List. What do you like about the list, is it the fact you can get feedback more readily or is it that it's more private? Do you have or want a site of your own fic.?

The 80s Metal Fanfic List has been very inactive, so it’s not about getting more feedback than if I had posted the story publicly. I like the private setting and the fact that people had to actively seek out the list to even be there. I like the kinship, I like knowing that we all have something in common … it makes me feel less strange for liking slash. I don’t have my own site, mainly because I don’t have the time or the skill for it. I’m really satisfied right now with just making posts --- I don’t really want the responsibility of site up-keep.
