Paula and Steve Go Down the Pub is a gen, adult het and slash Blake's 7 anthology by Paula Robinson and Steve Rogerson.

front cover

This zine has a sequel, Paula and Steve Stagger Home.

The cover & interior art are by Paula Robinson.

From the publisher's flyer: "It contains 10 short stories; eight of them have previously appeared on the Freedom City or its predecessor Space City (mailing) list, though one in a much shorter form, one exists on a web page and the other two are new to the zine. The stories are a mix of humour and horror and include some sexually explicit stuff. We appreciate that it is not everyone's cup of tea. The zine is 38 pages including illos..."

The cover design includes circles containing the words & phrases "sex, horror, yuckyness, comedy, more sex, gore, bush, bad taste," with the tagline "in other words, a load of balls."

Contents

All cowritten by Paula & Steve unless otherwise stated.

  • Purple Prose ("This was Paula and Steve's first joint effort, with just about every word written on scraps of apper during a pub crawl in north Bromley. It followed a call on the Freedom City email list for purple prose and a certain room party at Redemption '99.") (5)
  • Light at the End of the Tunnel ("At the Redemption '99 convention, the slash turkey reading session had a number of examples of writers getting their subjects literally tied up in knots with what were impossible situations while having sex. Doing deliberately was too tempting to resist.") (6)
  • Jailbreak ("Many Avon/Blake slash stories are criticised for feminising one or both characters. Paula and Steve would never dream of doing that. This story was written especially for this zine.") (8)
  • Everything New ("The challenge for the 1999 Freedom City anniversary party was to write a story involving something new. We decided to write a story with everything new.") (13)
  • Jenna's Baby ("This idea for this story came from a discussion in the Blake's 7 internet chat room (http://www.tellyfans.co.uk/htmlchat.htm) and our friend Claire was involved in these discussions. As a result, this story was written for the fiction library on Claire's website (http://members.fortunecity.com/obsidianfic/).") (15)
  • Blake's Se7en ("The 2000 Freedom City anniversary party called for stories based around the seven deadly virtues of diligence, humility, purity, courage, chastity, honesty, and charity. Paula and Steve turned to the film "Se7en for inspiration.") (19)
  • The Party ("After Blake's Se7en was published on the Freedom City email list, a post appeared from Joyce Bowen saying how much she hated the story and containing a lot of personal and inaccurate speculation about Paula and Steve. She later said she had meant to send that post privately to a friend and not to the list. This brought a number of posts of sympathy for Joyce from people who, despite it being explained to them, failed to understand why saying things behind people's backs that you are not willing to say to their face is wrong. Paula and Steve wrote this story in response, and some of the later dialogue contains almost direct quotes from the discussion on the list at the time. Paula and Steve would like to add here a thankyou for all the messages of support they got from people on the list and after this debate.") (25)
  • 7x7s: ("There was a call on the Freedom City email list for people to write 7x7 stories, that is stories that are exactly 49 words long. Here are Paula and Steve's attempts.") (29)
    • Alternative Orbit by Paula Robinson
    • Hair Ball by Steve Rogerson
  • Playing Home and Away ('After watching South Park on TV, Paula and Steve had another storywriting session down at the pub, this time armed with The big book of filth. Our goal was to get as many unusual sexual terms into one story as we could. To help in understanding, a glossary is at the end.") (30)
  • Glossary for Playing Home and Away, Taken from "The big book of filth" (33)
  • Manipulation by Paula Robinson (34)
  • Soul Mates by Steve Rogerson ("This is... here because it has already been rejected by two other zines. A much shorter version did appear on Freedom City.") (37)
