Author's Notes

THE EXPLANATION: This novella is constructed of a series of chapters, all with a basic theme: an intimate relationship between the men from U.N.C.L.E., as told from one person's point-of-view. While the author has taken may events and facts from the television series, the majority of this anthology is speculation or "alternate universe". The contents of this book contain no rape, sexual violence, torture, S&M, B&D, guilt trips, heroin overdoes, spankings, kidnappings, or transvestism. THE STORY: It is 1956. Napoleon Solo, an agent for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement, decides to satisfy a curiosity when he meets Illya, a small-time hooker in Greenwich Village. But their tryst is interrupted by THRUSH, and Solo discovers that this little Russian immigrant has more talent than meets the eye -- and more college degrees than clothes to his name. Illya is pulled into U.N.C.L.E. and soon rises through the ranks... to finally serve at his on-again, off-again lover's side. An affair which started out as a one night stand changes (through a course of seasons) into a partnership that lasts 'til the end of time.

From the Editorial

It was four years ago that the idea for this anthology/novella came about. CBN was running a campy spy guys series called "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.", and the attraction was immediate. While the show was first viewed with the most innocent of attitudes, it soon became too obvious to ignore the "suggestiveness" between the main characters Napoleon Solo ado and Illya Kuryakin. And the the innuendo that first appeared did not stop with just one episode.

In fandom, the speculation of homosexuality within partnerships is very popular with most television programs. Kirk/Spock, Bodie/Doyle, Starsky/Hutch were always among the favorites... but no one seemed to know of any interest in Illya/Napoleon. While fanzines like GRIP [1], THRUST, and CODE 7 (to name a few) were all the rage in other fandoms, Solo and Kuryakin stories were anonymously being mailed around the world to closet fen, via a sleazy underground network known only as "The Circuit". There seemed no hope for a budding U.N.C.L.E. slasher,... particularity one seeking a place for romance.

That is the reason One Night Stand was conceived.

The following is the end product of what began in 1985 (after spending four years in limbo in various drawers, boxes, and eerie dark corners). The first stages and pages were discovered in an old file folder just last fall... and in a world where guilt, and the horror of homosexuality loom too large, it was decided that the time had come for ONS to make its appearance. It is born at last in the dawn of U.N.C.L.E. "/" zines, sharing the small yet growing line with COMPROMISING POSITIONS, COMRADES and ROSE TINT MY WORLD. What had once been considered too innovative a project for the barren field of I/N fiction, ONS can now be proudly distributed with its fellow publications.

All illustrations within, as well as the cover, were beautifully rendered by the very talented KOZ. Her art, as seen in other "/" publications (CITY OF BYZANTIUM, EXPOSURES II, COMRADES II and ROSE TINT MY WORLD) is magnificent: ONS is honored to have her work represented. Truly a wonderful way to debut!

Putting out [missing word [2]] has never been so much fun. After four years of dormancy, it's about time.

Excerpt

The last two paragraphs:

The brunet gazed at him for a long period of silence, awed by the enigma that was his friend. Always there for me. Twelve years. Enough time for the seed that had been planted that first night to grow into a fully-blossomed love affair. He has become a part of me. Now he was being offered the fruit of his dreams, the answer to his life of betrayals and broken hearts. They may have met under bizarre circumstances, but if he had not taken the first bite of this particular apple... "I'm glad I came to my senses." Illya was pulled into a fierce embrace, and he grinned Joyously as he returned the pressure. At last he was complete; he no longer doubted Solo's feelings for him, no longer worried or wondered If he would ever know the peace for which so many homosexuals ~ so many people, gay or — straight — yearn. When you are patient, you are rewarded, he thought to himself. Kissing Napoleon's neck, he snuggled closer and sighed contentedly. "And they lived happily ever after," he whispered into his partner's ear. "Together."
