Mouretsu Pirates (モーレツ宇宙海賊(パイレーツ), lit. "Fierce Pirates"), known as Bodacious Space Pirates in English, is a light novel series created by Sasamoto Yūichi in October 2008 that was turned into a manga published in Asahi Shimbun from October 2008 to August 2014. It was made into an 26-episode anime by King Record Company Limited that aired from January 8, 2012 to June 30, 2012[1] and dubbed into English by Sentai Filmworks.[2] Sentai Filmworks also handled the English release for the Mouretsu Pirates movie, released on February 22, 2014.

The series gained much of its English visibility from Sentai Filmworks partnership with cosplayer Jessica Nigiri, who wore a costume of the main character, Marika Katou at several events including Anime Expo.[3]

Synopsis

Marika Katou is a freshman in high school who lives on the planet "Umi no Akehoshi" somewhere in space. One day, she is told that her father, who she thought was dead, was actually alive until just a while ago, and was the captain of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. And she also finds out that they need her, his heir, to be captain so that they can keep flying! Marika begins a new life as a high school girl, and as captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru![1]

Fandom

While the fandom is tiny, two popular ships are femslash (as the majority of the cast are women). The first is Katou Marika/Kurihara Chiaki, the main character who is learning how to become a pirate captain and her friend who is a daughter of a pirate captain. The second is Jenny Dolittle/Lynn Lambretta, a canon lesbian pairing who have a subplot in the manga/anime.

Mouretsu Pirates was eligible for Yuletide in 2012.
