Megamind is a DreamWorks superhero action comedy animated film, released in 2010. The film contains an overarching theme of outcasts and being type cast into roles that do not suit you based on your birth, only to eventually discover your true self and rise to your own potential. As such it is massively popular amongst queer fans especially. It is also notable for portraying a "Nice Guy" as the true villain of the story.

In February 2022, it was announced that streaming service Peacock would be releasing a follow-up animated series, Megamind's Guide To Defending Your City, taking place after the events of the original film.[1]

Canon

The supervillain Megamind finally defeats his nemesis, the superhero Metro Man. But without a hero, he loses all purpose and must find new meaning to his life.

Fandom

The Megamind fandom mainly gathers on Tumblr, but started out at the Megamind Livejournal for most American and European Fans. It is well known for their open politics on ships and headcanon diversity. The fandom expanded on the universe in the lack of new material and many of the villains that were scrapped in the concept stages of the movie are now well known and established fandom characters seen commonly in fic, art, and roleplay. Some examples are Psycho Delic and Lady Dopplar.

The main pairings are Megamind/Roxanne Ritchi (MegaRox) and Megamind/Metro Man (MetroMind), but just like in other DreamWorks fandoms, crossovers are fairly common to find. A popular crossover pairing is Megamind/Rapunzel (from Tangled), for example.

Memes

The Megamind fandom has given birth to some popular memes that transcend the fandom itself.

Around 2018, a Polish artist called JadeiteART painted a photorealistic image of Megamind. Some years later, they discovered it had become a meme dubbed "Megamind Ricardo". From their Tumblr post about the meme:

MY NAME IS MARLENA. I AM (or was until my tools broke) A DIGITAL ARTIST FROM POLAND. AND I PAINTED THIS SH**

I don’t mind it being a meme. It’s a fanart. I painted it for fun and because I really like that movie. I see this entire thing as a form of flattery. Also, you’re welcome, since this may be the closest you will ever see of a “live-action” Megamind (and considering how all the recent remakes of old classics are, it may be for the best).

I only want to know one thing, WHO THE F** IS THIS RICARDO?[2]

The name "Megamind Ricardo" comes from Brazilian adult model Ricardo Milos, himself a meme for his erotic dance video. The Megamind Ricardo meme largely revolves around jokes about the image's incredible hotness and/or its ability to turn viewers gay.

Fics

  • Code:Safe Word: An ongoing canon divergence AU fanfic by setepenre_set, a prolific Megamind author. It imagines that Roxanne Ritchi calls 'time out' on the Day of the Death Ray before Megamind can "kill" Metro Man, and then explains roleplaying and BDSM to him (with a hands-on explanation). M-rated, Roxanne/Megamind
  • Times Syx by StellaSilverShep: A post-movie Megamind/Roxanne fic, sometimes credited[3] as the origin of the fandom name "Syx" for Megamind (who is not canonically given a real name).
  • The Line Between Good And Evil by FujurPreux: a canon-divergent Megamind/Roxanne fic in which Roxanne is given the powers of Metro Man instead of Hal. Megamind tries and fails to maintain his triple identity as Megamind, Bernard, and Space Dad.
