Lunaescence.com Fanfiction Archives was a multifandom archive focused mainly anime, manga, and gaming fanfiction and written works of Jinx&Jedi.[2] Lunaescence is founded around 2003 based on eFiction Software. The site came into its own in response to Fanfiction.net's banning of adult content and the deletion of users posting it.[3]

In 2019, it contained over 19,000 stories in total, and had around 3,500 authors. The largest category was anime and manga fanfiction, with over 11,400 stories as of January 2019.[4]

History

Excerpt from the About Us[3] page of the site, which explains where the name comes from and when it came about:

Lunaescence.com is a small anime, manga, and gaming website. It contains a small collective of Web sites and several Blogs.

We opened our first Web site back in January of 1999, which was fan-page for the anime Yoroiden: Samurai Troopers and it's North American version called Ronin Warriors. We called it "The Ronin Dungeon" and offered a little bit of everything concerning this anime including fan fiction, fan art, information, and links. Unfortunately, time constraints eventually led to an extended hiatus in 2003 and permanent closure in early 2004.

Shortly after that Web site went on hiatus, we purchased Lunaescence.com -- though it didn't reach it's current incarnation until mid- 2004.

The name "Lunaescence" is actually a play on words between our dog's name, Luna, and the word "Luminescence." We combined the two, which gave us Lunaescence. ^_^

If you're interested in the long explanation... when I got Luna as a puppy, I really wasn't ready to end up with a puppy so soon. However, my old dog, Brownie, was very sick and we doubted we'd have her by the end of the week. So, very suddenly I had a little, tiny puppy. Flustered, I was brooding on the drive home on not only what to call her but about what I'd gotten myself into when I began staring at the full moon. Inspiration struck me and I named her "Luna" after that full moon. Brownie surprised us all by living another year, thanks to that little squirt.

Skip ahead several years later and I needed a domain name. Our original idea for a domain name was taken just a few hours before we could register it. Frustrated, I decided to try coming up with something a bit more creative. I ended up digging into my astronomy books and came up with the apparent magnitude of the full moon, which is -12.7. In Astronomical terms, that's pretty darned bright. Well, another way of describing brightness is "luminosity" or "luminescence." Since we're talking about the brightness full moon (and a little border collie cross who's too darned bright for her own good!) or Luna's Luminescence - I combined the two by removing "lumin" and inserting "luna" - which gave me "Lunaescence." Probably a bit cheesy, but - who's counting?

Rules

Lunaescence was a moderated archive. Moderators screened stories for spelling and grammatical errors before allowing them to be posted, and had some content guidelines regarding real person fanfiction and adult/minor content.[5]

The rules have changed very little over the years of the site's activity, as can be seen in the pages archived at Wayback Machine.

Maintenance

On July 23, 2003, the archivist Sally Knight left a notice on the fics page of the site where he informed who lost one of the works after moving the site's content. "Happy Birthday, Hisahsi" by Aikyo was even saved to a notepad, which was closed, prompting Sally to ask other users to give her a copy of the work. It is not known if this type of problem was recurrent, or if it was an isolated case.[1]

Server Fundraiser

In 2016, Lunaescence attempted a fundraiser on GoFundMe[6] This fundraiser does not appear to have ever reached its goal, which was to purchase a dedicated server for the site, to reduce costs and increase the site's longevity.

Site Relaunch and Subsequent Disappearance

In 2019, Lunaescence made plans of a full site relaunch with new code. This revamp was announced sometime between January 6th[7] and May 3rd[8], based on dates of site announcements.

Further announcements[9] suggest a limited Beta test for the new site was open to some users sometime between late 2019[10] and January 14th 2020[9].

Site functionality seems to have continued as normal until sometime between December 2nd 2020[11] and January 21 2021[12], by which point the site had been replaced by a single homepage with a countdown for the new site's unveiling, presumably on February 14th.

On February 19th, the official moderator twitter account @LunaescenceMods posted an announcement on Twitlonger that, due to difficulties caused by inclement weather, they would be resetting the site unveiling countdown for March 2nd.[13] The same day, the account tweeted a screenshot[14] teasing Lunaescence's as-of-yet unrevealed new homepage.

On March 2nd, @LunaescenceMods tweeted that their admin would not be available for launch, and that they would have to "make adjustments".[15] They followed this up with the promise to "keep everyone updated"[16]. On March 4th, the account replied to another user to apologize for the inconvenience, asking for "just [...] a bit more of your patience" and claiming an update would be posted later that day.[17] The user @LunaescenceMods has not tweeted since.[18]

As of March 2022, the site homepage has not changed, and all stories, authors, and other content remains inaccessible.
