Lord Drake's Bequest is a Merlin/Arthur modern AU by pennyplainknits (~10,000 words). The story was written for the Cliche Challenge at harlequinmerlin and combines two tropes, Marriage of Convenience and Pretending to be Dating, in one AU. Lord Drake's Bequest won the 2009 Merlin/Arthur Fanfic Awards in the category 'Best Romance Fic'.
Summary: "To my great-nephew Arthur I bequeath Tintagel Distribution, wholly and without reserve, save for one condition. You must marry, and stay married, for a period of no less than six months. You're a wonderful businessman Arthur, but a full life needs love and companionship, not just a string of affairs. Settle down young Arthur, and your life will be the richer for it."
Arthur needs to marry to take control of Tintagel Distribution. Fortunately he knows the right man for the job.
The author podficced her own story[1] and it is available at the Audiofic Archive. The podbook cover by cybel is a generic image and not Merlin related but helva2260 made a Merlin/Arthur cover as well.[2]

This is a really cute modern day harlequin style story where they're forced to get married and the act stops being an act (I kind of adore harlequin style, so there may be a few of these).[3]
I know this is quite an old one, but I hadn’t got around to reading it before now. I thought it would focus on their marriage, but it actually focuses on the build up to it, and it is brilliant. It is amusing to see that no one is surprised about their “relationship”, which causes them to take a look at how they both actually feel. The interactions between the pair of them is great fun, as is their relationship development.[4]
This fic was written for harlequinmerlin, and God, does it show. But in a fun, happy, very very good sort of way. This is kind of a guilty pleasure fic, because hey, Harlequin, but so good. Stars: * * * * *[5]
This was so, so lovely and one of my favorites. Arthur needs to get married for at least six months in order to obtain ownership of an important company left for him by his uncle. He can’t settle down, so he needs to pretend, and the obvious choice is Merlin, who he spends all of his time with anyway. They have to make it convincing, but somewhere along the way, they stop pretending. It isn’t until their wedding day that they realize each other’s true feelings, and it’s really sweet. I loved their relationship, how it was already so close before they even started pretending to be engaged. In the end, nothing really changed between them except the intimacy and the rings they wore on their fingers, and it was really adorable and emotional.[6]
This is a forced to marry and pretending to be boyfriends, modern day au. I haven't enjoyed a lot of the modern day fics so far, but this is one of my favorites.[7]
