Reactions and Reviews

1986

Murphy and Stuart done to a turn, through them we see Bodie and Doyle. Incidentally, I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair. I would kill to be able to write character like that. A real beauty.[1]

1988

"Loose Change" is a terse, finely crafted piece that in such a limited space perfectly captures a moment in the life of CI5. The characterization is sharp, the tension in the room real enough to feel as the agents interact. What I like best about this piece is how the reader is drawn into what is a slice of life story and yet still gets a well rounded, complete picture of events, tensions, arguments that have created the undercurrents in the squad room. We are given a good look at how these strong characters react to one another. We glimpse what binds them together and separates them from each other. In short, both characterization and the creation of the scene itself are finely turned and honed to form a very vivid picture. [2]

Again another apparent sequel, and I would *love* to read "Rediscovered in a Graveyard" just to see what went on first, but I *love* this fic on its own. There's some big operation building up, and virtually every operative has been called in and is awaiting Cowley to start the briefing. Its not just B and D, Murphy and various other agents are nicely done too. I found it hilariously funny, and occasionally very touching. I can't quote examples because their poignancy comes totally from the context. The bitter-sweetest for me is the very last line.[3]

Why this must be read: Because this is a rare moment in fic where we see and feel the bustle of the rest room before one of Cowley's briefings - the gossip, the tensions, the in-fighting, and of course our Bodie and Doyle. HG has got a lovely touch with the lads, and with the world around them, and this really feels like a snatched moment in the life of CI5, one of the in-between times that are so often missed, but which are so telling in what they reveal. (It also stands completely alone, I'm never sure why it's declared to be a sequel to Rediscovered in a Graveyard, as there's no solid connection between them that I can see... well, perhaps Doyle's suntan. *g*) [4]
